Reduced Loads for 308 Win

Not looking for recipes, just an idea of what I can achieve. I'll get the reloading data in print before ever tinkering with loading.

My boy's 5 now and, in the next few years, I'd like to get him deer hunting. Maybe at age 7 or 8? How far down could I load the 308 so it would still drop a deer but have meager recoil? thanks.

You can use .300 Sav data in the .308Win and get mild recoiling deer killing loads or Speer#10 book and they have a ton of reduced loads for all calibers.......................Harold

Just be careful with downloading. Stay within the recommendations of your load manuals. Downloading can be dangerous too.

John Wooters did this exact same thing for his wife in a .308 Sako Forester..................Never reduced loads with ball powders like Win 760 as the reloading manuals caution against this.Stick powders are fine like IMR 3031 etc.........Harold

Thanks. I'm only going to load what is printed in a manual. No experimenting for me.I know the hazards - one being a hang-fire.

In my one manual, I'm seeing about 2600fps for 125 grains. In my Nosler manual, I'm seeing 2380. That might be more like it for a youngster.

Thanks. I was looking through all my manuals up at camp and found some loads using IMR4227 in the older Speer manual. This is for a 125gr bullet.I'm thinking I could go down to 2000fps with a 125gr bullet to get him started. Then we could work our way up to 30-30 ballistics and then go hunting.
