Default I think that I found a good recipe for 30-30

Well, I went and bought a Savage 340 bolt action 30-30 this week that has a nice peep site on it. I also picked up some Sierra Game King 165 gr. .308 bullets for it. With 30gr. of IMR 4064 powder and seating the bullet to 2.550 I was able to shoot a 1.5 inch 3 shot group at 50 yards free standing shooting off from a sandbag. I honestly have to say that that is about as well as I can shoot with any gun, so I think that the load will work for me.

lol tuk! I have the same scale and love it . Glad you found your mark. Get comfortable and get it dialed in where you want it, then do your random shooting positions. That way you know the mark you can acheive

I know that scale is cheap, but it is just easy to set and it stays that way. I have an RCBS one too, but it is back in the box now that I am used to this cheapo Lee scale lol. It came with the anniversary kit that I bought last fall.

Congratulations on your accuracy - that certainly helps! I suggest that you now chronograph that load. I used that bullet for many years in a .308 @ 2800 FPS MV for deer, and found it to be a pretty tough customer for a cup-and-draw projectile-I never found one in a deer-they all went through w/o messing up much meat!

I am not sure they'd expand much at .30/30 velocity. Just a thought......

Try 150gr bullets with 34.5gr /Win 748 or 32gr/ Win 748 with the 170gr slug.Shot lots of deer with both loads and moose with the heavier bullet.......Harold

TUK101, that looks like the hollow point sierra to me,I'd expect them to open up quiet well at 30-30 volicity. I feel they are as light as I want in 30/06 cause the deer I've shot with them never took another step.
You may get some critical replies to your post because many people don't know the 340 is a bolt action with a clip instead of a tube mag.
Some of those rifles were really accurate and you may have one of them, but you'll likely need to scope it to find out.

I love the peep site that is on mine. And yes, the Sierra Game Kings that I bought are the hollow points and should work just fine. I went ahead and loaded some up with 31gr of powder but have not had a chance to try them out yet.

Nosler Ballistic tips should open up fine at 30-30 velocities as I find them too fragile under 100yards at 3000fps in more powerful guns..................Harold

My marlin likes 35 gr w748 Fed 210 and Hornady 170gr fp's. Get about 1.5" at 100yds which is about as good as one could expect.
