Anybody download a 300 Win mag to 308 or 30-06 levels?
 

Never heard anyone ask this before, but I was curious. I love my 300 and don't want to lose money to change to something with less power. The thing is, the older I get, the less I want the recoil. Any thoughts?

You can try 57.2 grains of IMR 3031 and a Hornady or Sierra 150 grain bullet. The velocity isright at2,900 fps.This is.30-06 velocity and the kick will be a lot less thana .300 at 3,400 fpswith the same bullet.

I have never tried it with my 300, but have always heard that magnums need to be stoked to preform to their potencial. The lightest load in any of my books still shows 51000CUP with a 150gr Win pt sp bullit and 76gr of Win 785 powder shooting 3150fps wich is still above 30-06felt recoil, you could just make the rifle hevier to reduce the felt recoil. My father-in-law has aSako 300 Wmag that weighs about 8.5lbs, the one I built based off a Mauser action weighs in at 13.7lbs, we both agree that mine is much more pleasent to shoot, you can accualy shoot mine with one hand with it laying on the shooting bench.

I have to agree with devil dog. My 300WM performed best when loaded hot. But to answer your question, you can download the 300WM. Without looking at my manuals I would select a powder that has the least velocity fills the case to just below the shoulder with a max load and drop that max load by 10%.
This should give you reduced velocity and recoil and still have enough powder in the case to allow for consistant ignition. Too little powder could give you trouble.

try shooting 125gr. nosler. people think its a varmit load but i kill deer all the time without them moving. the recoil should drop down. it works really well out of my 300 wheatherby, 30-06, and 308. good luck!
