Standard or Magnum primers?

When loading the 300 Win Mag and the 300 Rem SAUM, should I use the magnum or standard primer? What are the advantages of using magnum and what are the cons of using standard?

RE: Standard or Magnum primers?

I would use the Magnum primers. The mag primers will give you a more consistant ignition when using large amounts of slow burning extruded powder in magnum cartridges.

Thanks for the replies. Will changing to magnum primers increase speed, change point of impact or have any other effects?

You should always follow the directions of your loading manual.....I can't believe that there's a loading manual anywhere that recommends a standard rifle primer in a .300 Win Mag case!!!

I was just looking at the Hodgons reloading manual #25 edition
every magnum 7mm through 460 weatherby (PRIMER SIZE) LARGE RIFLE
(quotes)Some powders need mag primers but doesn't say which ones.

Hunter40, I have the Hodgdon's #26 manual......and it says "large rifle primer" for the .300 Mag and others as well!!!

From personal experience, there's little difference between Large rifle and magnum primers!!!

in my of so limited expireience and knowledge i think i have come across some info which said magnum primers do burn a little hotter but are also a little stiffer so that cratering and getting holes punched thru the primer is a less common expierience. though i doubt it really matters all that much.

RE: Standard or Magnum primers?

Thanks for all your replies. And Vapodog, I was referring to "large rifle primer" when I stated standard...and my lyman manual does specify large rifle. My other manuals say to use magnum primers. I do sometimes get flattened primers from a "non magnum" primer when using near max loads..but I see no other signs of excessive pressure, even when having loaded a case 8 to 10 times.
