Moly Coated Bullets
 

I'm going to start loading moly coated bullets for my 223 and 257. Does anyone have any rules of thumb such as staying with published load data or do you all bump the charge to achieve greater velocity, etc. any info will be appreciated.

I'd stay with a load that you have allready worked up, don't bump the loads. Your velocity will increase with the moly bullets anyway. I did see just a little bit of accuracy gained. Zeak

I agree with Zeak on the velocity and keeping your loads..accuracy?? Most moly coated bullets are used for the big bores to prevent copper fouling...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Ok, I am confused. Zeak and Pa, you guys saw your velocity increase with Moly??? That totally goes against most manuels and data I have ever seen. You lose pressure with moly bullets, therefore lose velocity. At least that what my Chrono says. About 50fps or more. Thats the reason alot of reloaders go past the recommended max with these bullets. Read your Barnes manuel and see what it says.

Further, I can see it if it offers advantages on varmints....but the stuff (molybdenum) is horribly toxic......Why would anyone want to shoot it into a &quot;meat&quot; animal???????

bigc...Velocity increase is hardly worth measuring when the shooting &quot;same&quot; load with moly coated. As for the manuals..?? Like I said,the only thing I will use a moly bullet for is calibers .30 and bigger to stop copper fouling.

PA, you said you agreed with Zeak about velocity and other things. You mentioned it. I wanted to explain, you will have velocity decreases. As far as not worth mentioning, I have to disagree. Especially if your like me and use std dev. and want a very consistent velocity. it might not make a big difference at 200 yards, but if you like me shooting 600yards or greater, very consistent velocitys make a difference. Also, these velocity changes could change your accuracy and you might have to increase your load a tad to get your previous accuracy.
