off the shelf ammo
I am taking my .270 in the woods for the first time this weekend. I havent shot a box of shells though it. My brother shot I think Winchester Super X's through it last year.
I am hoping to put a box through it this week but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a load(brand)that I should start with. The thing to do what should the same load he sighted the gun in with but he doesnt remember. This is the last rifle season for the year. I plan on starting to reload this summer. I just want something to cover me for this weekend. |
RE: off the shelf ammo
Most factory ammo for the .270 is 130gr bullet..key word MOST! Any ammo you buy with the same grain bullet will shoot "in the right county" but you might have to do some fine tuneing for different brands. Like I said, all factory ammo shoots just about the same, the only difference is bullet type and cost per box...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: off the shelf ammo
If you are hunting for deer, I think I would go with 130 gr. or 150 gr. Hornady Custom Ammunition. I have always obtained good groups from Hornady bullets, and they are tough enough for deer.
If you are hunting for elk sized game and up go with a 150 gr. Barnes X, Nosler Partition, Trophy Bonded Bear Claw, Swift A-Frame, of Win. Fail Safe. Try and get a couple of boxes of the same lot. Good luck on your hunt. |
