220 gr RN bullets in a 300 Mag
 

Well I bought a box of hornady 220gr RN bullets for my semi auto and it seems like I'm hearing a lot of people saying that I shouldn't shoot them out of a semi auto... So I was wondering if they would shoot decsent out of my 300 Mag or my 300 WSM???

This was my experiance with the 220 grain Hornady bullet from a 300 Win Mag.... It shot fine, it was accurate, but when you hit an elk you will find the copper stripped from the lead and just under the skin - the lead continued on and it did kill the animal but I never trusted it after that.... I moved to 200 grain Sierra's and 200 grain Noslers which proved to be the best...

Just my thoughts - I still have some left from 10 years ago....

I'm shooting 130lb whitetails under 100 yards... I'm sure they will be more than enough:)

My father-in-law use to use them in his 300wm, they put 200lbs deer on the ground in a hart-beat, bad thing though, you never got to keep any of the sholder meat, what a mess!!!. He has gone to the 180gr Nosler BT and got away from the round nose.

I have shot some of them,they didnt work well out of my .300wm.The deer I hit with them preformed great but alot more bullet then I needed.They were fun to try though,I am back to my 180gr

I bought a 100 of them and figured I use them up in the 300 mag, 300 WSM, and the 30-06...

When said and done I'll prob be using 165gr in the 300 WSM and the 300 mag... and prob 180gr RN in my 30-06:D

As sabot loader seems to be saying, some of those fat round-nose 220-grain bullets are too soft to be driven at real high velocities, especially the ones with a lot of lead exposed at the nose. But I see no reason why you can't use them in a semi-auto. What caliber is yours? just use a reasonable load, and keep the o/a loaded length within specs, and try them. You may want to use a medium-burn rate powder like IMR 4064 if you are loading for a .30/'06 or 308.......

If you decide to use them in the .300's, keep the velocity below 2500 FPS, and they should work well. I used 220's in a .308 Win. at 2300 FPS w/48 grains of Norma MRP, and they were great at putting deer down right away. They only gobble up alot of meat if they are driven too fast, because they are soft, and blow apart at high velocities....
