RE: prefered bullet
Really depends on my game. I am getting ready to go elk hunting next year on Santa Rosa Island, and I have to use barnes, no lead allowed. For deer, prefer sierra gamekings for slower rounds like my 7mm-08, 308. For my 270, I like bullistic tips or accubonds. For my big game guns like 300win mag, RUM, or STW, I like accubonds, or partitions. They have seemed to cause more damage than barnes X or TSX for me. I also like to use Swift A-frames for moose. But very expensive. For varmit rounds, I like V-max, bullistic tips, or gamekings. For long range fun, I like sierra matchkings. For my levers like 45-70, I like hornady 350gr or 300gr partitions. I find uses for them all.

RE: prefered bullet
My favorite bullet for deer sized game is the ballistic tip.It provides adequate penetration and quick kills. For moose and elk,I prefer the tsx as is penetrates more than the partition and expands very reliably at the muzzle velocities that my cartridges provide.

RE: prefered bullet
For deer sized game out of my 243 I prefer the Combined Technology BT. Out of my bigger bores I love the AccuBonds and the Barnes TSXs. My 7mm08 really likes 140gr Nosler Ballistic Tips and TSXs so its gonna be a coin toss this fall.

RE: prefered bullet
Old style Hornady Inter-Locks have worked for me from antelope to Yukon moose including a grizzly and everything you can eat in between.A longer list would be bullets I've tried and seen fail.................Harold

RE: prefered bullet
I am by no means an expert on bullets. But could some one please explain to mewhat a 150 grain-30 caliber-Barnes TSX shot from a 30-06will do to a deer that a150 grain-30 caliber Sierra GameKing will not do??? Especialy when it is 2 or 3 times more expensive??? Sorry guys but I am not buying it!!! I have shot lots of different bullets over the years-does any one remember the so called X-bullet that fell flat on it's face??? And they cost three times as much also!!! Very few people could even get those bullets to shoot with any accuracy.
They are alot like the Partitions. There is no question that the partition is a very very very good bullet. But again, what does it really do to a deer, or even an elk that a Sierra or Hornady will not do. And I can honestly say that most of the time the Sierra's will be more accurate than the Partitions. I know this from personal experience. I will not debate about dangerous game bullets-I have zero experience with DGB's, but it will be a cold day in **** when I pay the price for a Barnes TSX. Tom. |

As for the X-Bullet. I just shot my last two 30/30 AI loaded X-Bullet loads last season. Loved the performance. Addmitingly, that wide, open nose probably helped the expansion, where the other spitzer styled X-Bullets had opening issues. I never had a deer that didn't go poof when hit with one. |
RE: prefered bullet
out of my 30-06 I have been using Hornady interbonds (150gr) for deer the last 2-3 seasons but this year I bought a box of 165gr Sierra gamekinds and I am looking forward to trying those.

RE: prefered bullet
I shoot the Hornady 150grn spbt #3033 in my 30/06 and 308. They have done all I can ask , and I guess I'm pretty picky. 1.5 at 100 both rifles . I'm yet to find a factory that the 06' shoots under 4"

RE: prefered bullet
Like the Sierra Game King. I don't think the Barnes, even though they are effective, are worth the cost. L also like the Noslar Partition.

RE: prefered bullet
To SwampCollie: I totally agree with you. I am also a hunter who shoots at the front shoulder, not behind it. My goal is to break the deer down on the spot(which is what I believe you are doing). We load several .243's and 100 grain bullets that completely break a deer down, when the deer is shot in the front shoulder. Is it your belief that a 120 grain from a 7-08 will not hold together(my dad had a 7-08-it's in my safe now)? I am pretty sure the GameKing's will hold together.
My complaint with the more expensive bullets is simple. They ****me off. They do not cost any more to make. They are just enjoying a successful marketing campaign. Why else would they have to come out with new bullets every several years(Barnes and Nosler)??? It is the same with the ammo manufactures. They come out with new bullets and cartridges for one reason only-new sales. I am not saying that is a bad thing. But why do they have to charge that much more??? Have you seen the price of 30-378 Weatherby Ammo??? I guess it is the American Way!!! Fortunately for me I have seen it before. I am not attacking the long running Partition bullet. It is a fantastic bullet. But not necessary for 99% of the shooting hunter's do. I would consider it for heavy dangerous game, but I do not hunt heavy dangerous game. Tom. |
RE: prefered bullet
I think those cheap Remington Core-Lokts will kill a deer just as good as the TSX's or Partitions. I have used round nose bullets out of my .270 and that deer was just as dead as the deer I shot with the X-bullet. Right now I am using the TSX's in my 7mm Mag, not for any particular reason, I just have about 60 of them, so I should use them. If I ever get a chance to go elk, moose, or caribou hunting I will use either my A-Frames or Accubonds. For varmints, I think the V-Max, BlitzKings, are pretty hard to beat. But I want to try the Bergers next. ;)

RE: prefered bullet
Accubonds. Great for the deer, elk, black bear, and occasional coyote I shoot 'round here.

RE: prefered bullet
original Swift Sciroccos - at least the 130 grain .270 and the 180 grain .30 caliber.

RE: prefered bullet
Of course any of them will kill fine with a properly placed bullet. I am always experimenting to find the bullet that shoots best in my gun, and will do the most damage on those "less than perfect" shots (and that is why we reload, right?). I found the Barnes TSX to shoot amazing groups in my 300WM, but had a strange experience with the TSX on a bull elk last fall. To make a long story short, I questioned if the Barnes left a very large wound channel, since the bullet did not hit any bone. I am trying the Accubond this year and the Swift A-Frame($$$) to find a bullet my gun likes and that will do good damage on those shots less than 100yds.
After all said & done, I will probably end up back with the NP, which always brought my elk down with ease. |
RE: prefered bullet
I find a bullet and buy a bunch, I agree barnes are too expensive and let me say they shoot perfect out my 300 Win Mag.
I have 700 orginal Swift Scirocco 165 grain bullets stashedfor the 300 Win Mag, I may neverneed to resupply. it go's at 3300 fps with 77.5 RL 22. I have 700 Accubonds for the 35 Whelen, 200 Partion 250 Grain, and 100 280 grain Swift A frames.Still perfecting the load with RL 15 and the accubondsbut it's a putter gun 0-100 yard rangewith capibility to be a mid range 250 yard gun if need be. 2620fps with 56.3 of RL 15 and that 225 accubond, hammered. The varmint guns 223, 22-250are whatever is on sale, but the 158 castlead bullets in the remington 750 carbine 35whelen is my favorate. |
RE: prefered bullet
30.06= 130gr Barnes TSX
25.06 = 110gr Nosler Accubond |
RE: prefered bullet
For me the cost of bullets is minor compared to what it costs me to hunt. I like theinsurance a solid constructed bullet afford so IMHO it is well worth the price of admission, bullets like barnes, nosler partition, etcare my preferred choice when hunting game larger then deer. In reality I don't need to shoot my hunting bullets just for pratice, I have the loads developed and proven so all that is required is some fine tuning and confidence runs so 100 bucks vs 50 really doesn't add up to a big spender in my way of thinking.
Neither are my choice for deer though as mentioned and would agree they aren't necessary. Though I also realize some like one load for everything and wouldsay it is better overkill on deer then under on bigger than deer game. |
RE: prefered bullet
For my good ole lever guns, my handguns, and my muzzleloader, the Hornady XTP. For my flat shooters, i use Hornady SST. I would like to try the accubonds, just cant pry myself away from Hornady!

RE: prefered bullet
Barnes TSX now, Barnes X before that. 20 one-shot kills with 25-06, 7/08, 284, 280 rifles and a 260 handgun speaks for itself. Have never had a deer go more than 50 yards. Ever! I load them light for caliber: 100 gr for 25-06, 130 for 7/08 and 140 for the two other 7's at around 2900 fps. Powder varies by gun: H4831 for 25-06 and 280, RL 19 for 284 and Varget for 7/08. The 6.5 handgun, 120 gr and IMR 4350 at an honest 2700 fps from 15" barrel.
Man cannot live by bread alone....takes Barnes too. |
