WSM Loads

I am reloading my 7mm WSM and I am using Retumbo powder for the first time. Going by the recommended loads from Hodgdon for a 162g bullet (66g to max of 70.5g), and I am using 68g, itfills the case to the shoulder. When I try to place a Hornaday 162g into the filled case, I have to force the bullet into the powder with a crunching sound, leaving no space at all. I have never had a powder do this. Is this powder designedto dothis?I have never had a case filled with no airspace and am concerned about pressures. Anyone else have experience with this?

I’ve had the same experience with my 7 mm-08 and it hasn’t given me any problems for MY rifle. If I’m not mistaken it’s called a compressed load, but I have been wrong before...

Yep, definately compressed. Retumbo is really not a great powder for the WSM line, as I found out with 300WSM. It is rather large for its weight. RL22 would suit your needs alot more. Or even 4831sc.

You can get a longer drop tube to help settle it down some. Believe it or not, you can fit an extra 2 gr in sometimes.

I know I used Retumbo for RUM and it was such a slow powder, I had to put 102gr in to reach the velocity of a 96gr RL25 load. And RL25 is very slow.

Can't say I ever used any of thier powders. I have tried RL22, Hodgdon 4831sc, H1000, IMR7828, IMR4350. 4831sc seemed best suited.

Yup, I've used H4350 for the past year, but wanted to try one of the powders touted as "made for the magnums" and see if there was any appreciable difference. The H4350 has given me great performance.

Retumbo was made for the RUM's and cases able to carry more than 90gr of powder

Got to go along with BC on this one. Retumbo is similar to RL25-very good powder for the UM's, but not the WSM's. I also agree with his choice of RL22. I also like 4831 in my 300 WSM with a 165 Grain Nosler BT. Tom.

I use retumbo in my 7mm saum and 175 gr. bullets with excellent results. Yes it's a compressed load too.

I have been using RL-19 for 3 years noe with Hornady 139 gr. for 3300 and also us it in 160gf partition with tack drivng results and would not think of using any other powder. dime covers 3 shot group and i60 gr. partation 3/4 for 160. Try it you will like in Model 70 winch.
