Muzzle break or Magna-port for 375HH
 

Got a 375HH that hates me, at least it tries to kill me when I pull the trigger. Should I muzzle break or Magna-port? Which causes more velocity loss? What would you boys do?
Magna-port on my 30:06 and 300Win mag but have been told a muzzle break will do better. I want the most reduction I can get on the 375.

I have a brake on a 7mm mag. There is about a about 40% reduction in recoil when it is on. There is also a increase in noise about 40%. Also, a good butt pad will help if you don't have one already. A Past shoulder pad will help as well.

I'd suggest a better stock. If a .375 is kicking you so hard that you hate to shoot it then it's a stock problem. The .375 H&H is a relatively light kicking round, there's no reason to need a brake on it.

Boltman.....I'd like to both agree and then disagree with you. I have two of those nasty guns. One a custom stocked thing, the other a Remington 700 clasic and that classic is well stocked....but it's light!!

While shooting freehand or at game with either of those guns, the recoil is something I never notice.....My focus is on the job of doing a fine shot at a game animal.

However, go sit at a bench to do groups at 100 yards with 300 grain solids or even 260 grain partitions and I'm forced to put a sand bag between me and the gun's butt to protect me. Oh...I'm a 6-1" guy at 250 pounds too!!

I personally have no need for a muzzle brake on my .375H&H, but sure can see why some folks want one!!

I'm surprised I didn't hear from more of you. I can't agree with a better stock as the Winchester stock and pad is no slouch.
Muzzle brake is being installed.
If that don't work I'll sell it and make a profit.

I have a 375 tamed by a visit to AnswerRifles (go to answerrifles.com). They put a slimline muzzle brake on and a special butt pad that has 5 internal double springs. Recoil now is about like a 243. The cost for the complete package was about $200 several years ago.

As an alternative, I purchased a 300 Ultra Mag last summer which is no slouch when it comes to recoil. I had an old Browning mechanical recoil pad, that skeet shooters use on shotguns, hanging around so we mounted it on the 300. Avoided the noise of the muzzle brake and reduced the felt recoil substantially. Don't know why more manufacturers don't offer this kind of option for a stock. There are several different types of these recoil reducers around. You might want to check at a skeet range or look through some skeet magazines. I have one called a Hydra-coil on my K-32 which also works well and could easily be adapted to a rifle.

Sure, I can take the pounding but why try to prove something with all that?

Sorry, should have added that you need to give yourself some generous eye relief on your scope if you us a mechanical recoil pad. Remember, the recoil is going to be reduced by virtue of the gun being able to collapse back on the recoil pad thus moving the scope toward your eye. So, if you install this type of system, start the adjustment out on stiff and work your way down. Otherwise, that scope is going to remind you rather painfully, that you are too close to it.

Thanks to all that gave suggestions. Got the rifle back last week and shot it last Saturday. Fired off 30 rounds and will keep it. Recoil is no worse than my magna-ported 300 win mag. In fact I am going to use the 375 next season as it is now a nice rifle to shoot. I put a M8 6x Leopold on it and didn't once feel like I was going to get hit by the scope. The muzzle break tamed the beast.
