.22-250 Reloads
 

I have been given a Weatherby Pistol in .22-250 the barrel lenghth is 15" I am interested in any loads that are proven to be sufficient in taking Whitetail Deer. I am aware that this caliber is a little small for deer, but I am sure I can make this work as long as the shot placement is their as well as adequate bullet and load. Any help will be greatly appreciated!-bjhawk

Oregon does I don't know about all the othe states but believe Texas does also . You will have to check on the state where you live .

The law in NY used to be that you could only hunt Big game with a .35 or larger caliber pistol, being that the barrel is 16" or less or longer than 8" in an autoloader. Now this law has changed to state that you may hunt with any centerfire caliber as long as you have a valid NYS pistol permit and the barrel is 16" or less or 8" or more in an autoloader. Nice Huh!

Hornady makes a 75 gr bthp I believe. I have never loaded for anything over the 55 gr VMAX. What bullet were you planning on using?

The bullet I plan on using is anything that will give good expansion and hold together without blowing up. I would try probably trophy bonded bearclaw or maybe a Swift bullet or Nosler partition. Anyone have any experience in loading this caliber-.22-250 for deer? Help!

Kansas only allows .230 and larger (not .24 like DG had mentioned), but the .22-250 is still pretty short of .230!

I'd say find some .22 bullet (if not designed for the .22-250) that'd be AT LEAST 75gr. If I ever saw heard of anyone hunting deer with a 55gr bullet, I'd slap them. I'd think that you'll want something like you said in the Partition hardness range, and I have a ton of faith in the Nosler Part. The Bearclaw would be a good choice too, I've seen what both of these will do on coyotes, and they are pretty much too hard for yotes, but would be perfect for deer. Only thing is, I'm not sure that either the Part.s or the Bearclaws are made that heavy?

Do not attempt to kill deer with a .22 cal bullet of any weight. It just doesn't have enough ass, I don't care how you slice it. To me it is just plain stupid and unethical.

BTW, when you shoot a 22-250 Rem out of a 15" barrel it makes the proposition of killing a deer even more asinine.

How would using a 22-250 be any more unethical than bow hunting and chasing a deer down for 150-200 + yards and letting it bleed to death?
I've never bow hunted, but I have taken 2 bucks with a 22-250 that never made it more than 10 yards from the spot that I shot them at. Both deer were at approx 115 yards when I shot them. That gun has plenty of power to kill whitetail deer (where I hunt anyway) and I would imagine would do much more damage than any bow can.
