7mag H1000 160 gr bullets
Gunshow is on this weekend so I'll be stocking up on some powders and wondering if I should try some H1000 for the 7 rem mag and 160gr bullets. I have heard alot about its use with heavier for caliber bullets just never tried any yet. What is your thoughts? ShouldI just stick to Imr 7828 as a comparisonto RL22? Availabilityhas been tougherwith RL22, I have a good supply of a proven lot but would like to have some options JIC.
Thanks |
RE: 7mag H1000 160 gr bullets
I've been looking at H1000 myself. I want to shoot 168gr Berger VLD's and the Berger data shows it asthe fastest powder. I can't sayI've ever used it, but I've heard some really good reviews w/ the 7RM.

RE: 7mag H1000 160 gr bullets
I've never used H1000 out of my 7mag. RL22 seems to work good for me, so I've never seen the reason to change yet. I have used some various other powders experimenting, but always fall back to the RL22.
I've got a good selection of loading books around me if you need some load data for anything. |
RE: 7mag H1000 160 gr bullets
Rammer like you RL22 has worked very well. However like I mentioned its availabilityhas becomesuspect here it seems and while I haven't experienced big lot swings I know it exists from all the others who have. I would like to have options, 7828 looked promising but was just wondering if their were others I should try instead or as well.
Yeah I'd be interested in seeing load data on H1000 and RL25 to compare with RL22 and 7828. Thanks |
RE: 7mag H1000 160 gr bullets
Any particular bullets you are looking at loading with the H1000? I got the complete loadbook for the 7mm Rem Mag sitting here.

160gr Accubond
thx |
RE: 7mag H1000 160 gr bullets
Under the Nosler portion of the book they do not even list H1000 for a load or RL25.
IMR 7828 Min 62.5gr @ 2890 fps with 77% case capacity Max 66.5gr @ 3090 fps with 82% case capacity RL 22 Min 59.0 @ 2868 fps with 73% Max 63.0 @ 3058 fps with 78% Hodgon Powder H1000 Min 63.0 @ 2729 Max 66.0 @ 2839 If you'd like any more details let me know! |
RE: 7mag H1000 160 gr bullets
Yeah rammer that is the problem with both these powders. The info I have seenis well above 66grs - 70-72.5 seems to be what guys are pushing to get in the 3000 area.
I have the newest availablelymans, nolser and barnes so that alright...thanks for the offer though. |
RE: 7mag H1000 160 gr bullets
I just did come checkin and I had good luck with IMR 4350 and IMR 4831 out of my 7mag. That was with the 140gr bullets. Never tried that with heavier bullets.

RE: 7mag H1000 160 gr bullets
Well, you can go out and buy a pound of thisor a pound of that or whatever until you have spent one hundred dollars or you can buy a pound of RL22 and have the best power for the 7Mag there is period! Been there, done that. Save your ducats and don't worry about 22.8794563 feet per second.:DRegards, Rick.

RE: 7mag H1000 160 gr bullets
I wouldn't say R-22 is the best by any means. R-22 is good for the lighter bullets, but R-25 has been around 250fps faster and far more accurate with the 150's and up in all of my 7mags. Brett

RE: 7mag H1000 160 gr bullets
Rick, as I said availability of RL22has beensuspect, so while I have a good/proven supply I figured what better time to do some testing!!
Think somebody forgot to take theirmeds today:eek:? Brett, got any load data you'd like to share with regards to RL25? |
RE: 7mag H1000 160 gr bullets
Skeeter- I use 154gr Interbonds because their BC(.525) is almost as good as the 160 Accubonds (.531), but I can push them around 100-125fps faster than the 160's.
My favorite elk load is 72gr of R-25 under a 154IB. In my 26" barrel this averages 3255fps in 50 degree weather. In my rifle this load shoots 3/4". This is a flat flat shooting load! I believe this load is around .5gr over max in the new Hornady manual so start around 67gr and work up slowly. I have no pressure signs, but as you know, all rifles are different. Hornady max load says it will only do 3000fps, but I've confirmed this velocity in two other rifles. My buddy's 24" gun will do 3205fps. I can only get the 160 Accubonds around 3140fps safely. This makes the 154 a flatter shooter by a pretty good margin. I can only get around 3000-3050fps w/ R-22 and these bullets. Hope this helps, Brett |

ORIGINAL: 48thguns Well, you can go out and buy a pound of thisor a pound of that or whatever until you have spent one hundred dollars or you can buy a pound of RL22 and have the best power for the 7Mag there is period! Been there, done that. Save your ducats and don't worry about 22.8794563 feet per second.:DRegards, Rick. For the 175-grain bullets, I found that of currently available powders, I had to switch to IMR 7828 to get the performance I was getting BACK IN THE EARLY 1970'S with Norma N205! I wish Norma had not discontinued that powder, as you could get more of it into a case than RE22 as well. Its density was greater, and thegrains were smaller as well..... In addition, in MY 7 Mag., H4831 will permit me to get over 3300 FPS with 140-grain bullets, and my cases can be reloaded at least 10 times before they have to be tossed. So, IMO, RE 22, as good as it is (and it is!) is not the ONLY useful powder for loading 7mm Magnum cartridges! |
RE: 7mag H1000 160 gr bullets
Thanks Brett for the info.
I needed some 7828 for 300 loading so restocked on it anyway and will add something else to the mix be it RL25, H1000, Retumbo, etc to try under the 160AB's. I also havefew 154 IB's as well. |
