Primer Shortage
Is it my imagination or are primers getting hard to find these days?

Hard to tell. Primers in MD is always hard to get. Only 3 places I know to get them. I buy by the thousand when i do.

RE: Primer Shortage
Back during Clinton's first term, there was big primer shortage. I still have many of the cases of them I stockpiled. Word from the gun grabbers was that this was the achille's tendon of the reloading world. Hard to make in your basement. And impossible to assemble reloads without. There has been a backlog of AR-15 lower receivers since the November election. Wouldn't be surprised to see a primer shortage, if there isn't already one, in the near future.

RE: Primer Shortage
After reading this post here and elswhere when I was in two local shops todayImade a point to check primer stock. Not a federal rifle primer in either of them but both shops had winchester & CCI primers. Both shops said they are awaiting their federal orders to be filled and shipped but no ETA. I still have a couple cases of match primer so no pannick but it appears federal is a problem up here at least. Prices are up. I picked up a case of 209w -new 100 price 4.99 and last year was 4.29.

RE: Primer Shortage
I help out at a local gun shop ocasionally, and what we hear is that most of the .223 ammo and a lot of the components are being shipped overseas. FMJ ammo is still available, but not much soft point stuff.

RE: Primer Shortage
I was at the sporting goods store the other day, one that usually has a pretty good stock of all reloading supplies and they had plenty of primers, mostly CCI and Winchester. But I did notice that .223 ammo was sky high in price. Close to $8 a box, up from around $4.50 a box this time last year. I asked and he said yes, it was going up and up. I guess that it is time to buy a set of dies for those too, and a bunch of primers just in case.

RE: Primer Shortage
It seemed for a while there things were hard to come by around here. The gal at the pro shop said it was because production was geared to meet gov demand 1st. Her shelves are stocked again and she's full up at this time.

RE: Primer Shortage
No shortage of primers, but .223 and 7.62x39 is rediculously expensive.

RE: Primer Shortage
Well the loveland sportsmens wharehouse doesnt have ONE standard rifle primer 308 and 30-06 based). Not one. They have a few magnum rifle primers but out of almost everything. I hope they get some in soon. EJ

To Halcon,
I was able to buy a box of 200 rds. of federal 50 gr. hp ammo at Wally World the other day, but have returned since and they do not have any more. Haven't seen any RP in 200 rd. or larger boxes. |
