7mm grand slam loads
Anyone load those flat base grand slam 143's for the 7mm WSM? I loaded some up with that MAGPRO poweder. It was specifically designed for the short magnums like SAUM's WSM's and the like. The data from Mestern powder says that with a 140 grain bullet and 73 grains of powderit should be movin a little over 3200 FPS. I am thinkin it might be only movin like 3175 to 3200. Just wondered if anyone had any experiences.
As well, does anyone here use grand slam bullets and how do they hold together at 50 to 100 yard shots? EJ |
RE: 7mm grand slam loads
Well I don't know if they would hold together going at a velocity of
over 3000 ft per sec or not... Grand Slams are not bonded bullets so I'd think they are more dependable at velocities at 2700-2800...... I thinking the bullet will still be traveling at 3000ft /sec out to 100yrds but I don't know.... But regardless,I'd say there are better bullets than these to use with the cal. of gun you have........ |
RE: 7mm grand slam loads
Grandslams have a great reputation of holding up and penetration. I shot a moose with one and penetrated all the way thru. I did with a 300RUM. Another friend of mine uses them exclusively in his win mag.
Only complaint is I usually get poor accuracy with them. But high velocity with no pressure signs. For example my 180gr partition load with 94gr of H1000 in a RUM I had once got less than 3200fps. But same load for 180gr GS, got 3300fps. |
RE: 7mm grand slam loads
Thes seemed to be accurate. I say seemed because we set the target up at 75 yards instead of 100 to get my wife used to her 243. I was making the holes touch with these 145's, but that was at 73 grains of magpro. At 75 grains, they went all over the place. So, any guesses on what my FPS is on this load? I got to save up for a chrony. EJ

RE: 7mm grand slam loads
I would personally recommend the 160 gr. Grand Slam for any magnum class caliber. The 145 gr. was good in my 7X30 Waters and my buddies 7X57 - I think it's a little soft for 3200 fps.

RE: 7mm grand slam loads
So, have you seen them fall apart? I am gonna try to use some of the 145's in my 7mm WSM for smaller hogs. I dont have the dough to splurge on new bullets right now. So I should slow them down? EJ

RE: 7mm grand slam loads
Slowing them down for shorter range shots would probably be a good idea - particularly for something as dense as a hog. Try to come up with a load that produces a MV of around 2800 fps. I think if you go any faster the bullets are going to come apart on a dense tissue/bone impact at close range.
