Speer mag-tips
Has anyone tried these before? I picked up an open box special from local shop for 6$ for 98 bullets, they are 150grn .308. I checked Speers website and other then just a few 1/1000's of a difference in BC, I dont think there isa difference from these and the Grand Slams. Any opinions?

RE: Speer mag-tips
They are different than the Grand Slams. The mag-tips are not bonded, the GS's are. As far as I know, the bullet construction of the mag-tips is the same as their regular hot-cor bullets. The mag-tips have a blunt nose on them, so they can't be otherwise deformed in the magazine box from heavy recoil.

RE: Speer mag-tips
Gotcha, their website is a little confusing(or Im a little dumb) they list both the Grand Slam and Mag-tips as "Hot-cor" construction and only the Trophy Bonded Bear Claws as a "bonded" bullet. Not that I need a bonded bullet for whitetail I was just trying to see what I got.

RE: Speer mag-tips
According to "Speer Reloading Rifle & Pistol Manual Number 12" the Speer Mag Tip: represents an intermediate step between original Hot-Core and the premium Grand Slam bullets.
Good luck |
RE: Speer mag-tips
You're right. I checked Speer's website, and the Grand Slams are not a bonded bullet. Sorry for the bum info.

RE: Speer mag-tips
I use to use 175 mag tips in my 7x57 mauser, and they sure worked well... I don't think they are anything spl. in the bigger magnums but within there rated velocity range they worked well for me..
I never used a Gran Slam that i was impressed with... Speed them up and they will come apart and stop penetrateing. They aren't even even close to being as good as an NP... DM |
