Bought a 7mm rum

Well guys, I bought it. Man, I have fell in love with this rifle. I bought it in the scendero and love it.

Only thing, Rem. is wrong on the ballistics. The rifle actually shoots better than they say.

I was hunting this past weekend in Uvalde Tx. and as usual entertaining customers. After dropping the customers on one side of the ranch, I went looking for coyotes to test this animal out.

I was sighted in at 1.5 inches high at 100 yards. I killed a coyote at 310 yards and hit it exactly 1 inch higher than where I was aiming without adjusting the aimpoint.

The next coyote that I shot at was at 550 yards. I wanted to see what the bullet drop would do. At 550 yards and not adjusting the aim point, I hit the coyote but right at his chest line. He spun around about five times, licked himself and ran off.

I figured to be at the most 1.5" low at 550.

What an animal.....love it.

Of course this rifle may shoot different in other parts of the country.

RE: Bought a 7mm rum

The trajectory might be a little better than the remington data but certainly not only 1.5" low at 550 yards with a 1.5" high point of impact at 100 yards.I would put up targets at 300,400 and 500 yards and shoot a group at each distance. The actual trajectories that result will be a far cry from the numbers you have just quoted.

StubbleJumper

Plan on shooting those rages after the season but when I shot at the coyote at 550 I was in a vice. I can only tell you what I did and what the range was since we had a range finder. But then again what do I know...I am only the guy that did the shooting. It is guys like you that pull your pencil and calculater out and say that is impossible that know everything, even though you weren't there. I have six guys that were with me that will tell you.

No doubt you your shot hit that coyote. But exactly where did you hit him at 550yds? The exact point of impact cannot be verified unless you recovered the body.
Taking one shot at that distance verifies nothing as far as trajectory because variances in both temp. and humidity can effect the bullets flight path, either upwards or downwards.
This info comes not from just looking at ballistics charts but from actually shooting at distances out to 600yds.

"Lord, make me fast and accurate."

Stone Cold-I speak from experience as I own two 7mmstw's and a 7mm ultramag.I handload both to higher velocities than you can get with factory loads in your ultramag and shoot both to 500 yards on a regular basis at my local range. With a zero of 2.75" high at 100 yards and 140gr ballistic tips all three of my rifles are 18" to 19" low at 500 yards. The numbers you quote are simply not possible.I have no doubt that you did hit a coyote at 550 yards but there is not a cartridge available that can produce enough velocity to be anywhere near as flat shooting as your numbers indicate. When you shoot some groups at various distances you will see the true trajectory of your cartridge.

I have never shot the 7mm rum, but I do have a 300 rum. I shoot 165 nbt, sighted in 3" high at 250, and will shoot about 8" low at 500. Not sure what the difference would be with the 30cal. but should be fairly close.

RE: Bought a 7mm rum

Uh oh guys, call the white house. We got another one of those magic bullets that hit kennedy. Also own one of the RUM's, and have shot 500 yards. Do you mean 1.5 foot high at 100 yards? Ha Ha Or 550 feet distance? That bullet should have fell over 25" at 550 yards with a hot load. I don't care if it was a 130 grain bullet spitzer boat tail. Or are sure your were TX. Maybe the moon. With the moons gravity you might be able to get those bullistics but here on earth have to deal with gravity acceleration at 32ft/sec square. I think you just showed your knowledge of bullistics and reloading.

Big country-Zeroing the rifle 1-1/2" high at 100 yards then holding dead on at 550 yards and expecting a kill shot shows a lot about ones knowledge of ballistics.

RE: Bought a 7mm rum

OK guys,

First of all I never quoted any exact numbers. Second, I told you what happened on the shot and the range. I also said that I didn't know the exacts on the ballistics of this rifle. I never quoted exacts. But, I can tell you what I did with the shot. As far as being an expert reloader? Don't know where you pulled that one out of your ass. I have never reloaded in my life. I plan on starting but never done it.

The problem I have is most of you guys don't like to help you like to criticize. The others that aren't criticizing are asking the questions.

I didn't know this was a forum for experts only!!!!!!!!!

RE: Bought a 7mm rum

Well, if you didn't notice, you are on the reloading forum, not the guns or whatever forum. And wierdly enough, most of us on this forum, (you guessed it), reload. So when we (on the reloading forum) tell about a shot, it was usually a reloaded cartridge. I didn't know you wanted any help as you are now saying. You said you had a range finder, so on your original post, you are using exacts here on the yardage.

I learned to reload off this forum almost 3 years ago. So its not meant for only experts. But the statement you made is very argumentive to say the least, and then when an experienced reloader tryed to explain the truth to you, you scoffed at him. That is how this all went down. Stick around. Alot of guys will help "if you ask a question". Bigbob being one that helps me out the most.

bigcountry. This is the White House calling. Factory 7mm rum ammo will drop 25.7" at 500 yrd with a 250 yrd zero and a 140.g NP. I wont scoff. Any advice you can give with the 300 rum I'll be thankfull.

RE: Bought a 7mm rum

StoneCold-We are more than willing to help. When you told your story I merely mentioned that you should set up targets and check your trajectory as the numbers you quoted could not possibly be correct. You brought on the attitude in response to my reply to you.Attitude is usually responded to in kind.
CaptRay-I also have two 300 rum rifles and find that with 165gr bullets the trajectory is almost identical to the 7mm rum with 140gr bullets. In both cases the bullets are ballistic tips and the loads are handloads.

RE: Bought a 7mm rum

Capt, your probabley right. I don't shoot the 7mmRUM but the .300RUM. What kinda advise are you looking for with your 300RUM. My load that shoot is 180 Nosler PT with 94gr of H1000 and 215 primer loaded out to 3.625COL. Its not the most accurate, but my main load. My most accurate so far was been 90gr of H1000 with 200gr A-frames with 215 Primer. But who can afford those bullets. Most of the .300 RUM's I have seen seem to shoot heavier bullets better.

RE: Bought a 7mm rum

bigcountry, looking for a load for the 300 rum with a bullet weight of around 165g. will be using the loads this spring to hunt wild boars in the rolling hills of vandenburg airforce base. very long shots with little to no wind and an altitude of around 6000 ft. thanks.

RE: Bought a 7mm rum

Capt Ray- I have had the best luck with r-22 or h-1000 when using 165gr bullets.

RE: Bought a 7mm rum

bigcountry, I did a load using RL 22, 98.5 g, but using a 125 g bullet, pushing around 3680 fps. any info using IMR 4350, IMR 7828 with the 150 g NBT? I did like the performance of the r 22 125g, but a little light for the larger hogs at the ranges encountered.

Entertaining thread!

Have you guys compared h1000 and rl 22 to rl 25? I'm curious b/c that is all I've loaded with for my 300 rum, and got sub moa groups last night with 96.5gr of rl 25 with cheap 180 sierras. I don't have a chrono! I'm trying to decide if I should try some other powders, as my results have been less consistant that I wanted.

Also, my oal is limited to 3.61 b/c they won't fit into the mag of my a-bolt otherwise. I'm not seating them as far out as I would like. Anybody else having this problem?

Thanks
Mike

RE: Bought a 7mm rum

Capt, nope can't help ya there. I have only shot 180g and 200gr bullets out of my 300RUM. I reserve the Re25 and Retumbo for 200gr and use H1000, and use 4350 and H1000 and Re22 for 180.

How is your accuracy with 125gr bullets? I thought that 1 in 10 twist might be a little much for that. I bet that sucker is movin on.

bigcountry 12-12-2002 11:00 AM

RE: Bought a 7mm rum

Mike, to answer your question, if re25 works for you, then besides retumbo you got one of the slowest powder you could use and probably getting close to the highest velocity you can get. I say stick with it. I didn't have good luck with it. I only tried it with on bullet. But H1000 does the best for me.

RE: Bought a 7mm rum

bigcountry, thanks for the reply. Been out defending our country. I think you may be on to something. The accuracy wasn't what I expected although the velocity was good (3680 fps). Thinking about going to 90g of 4350. Hunting this week end with 150 NBT and 87g of 4350 and 9 1/2M. Think it would help going with the 90g of 4350 (125 NBT) or is it a lost cause?

mikea, my oal is 3.629 and I'm not having any problems in my Rem 700 sendero. Can't help you there.
