Buying factory ammo
 

After a conversation with bigcountry Mon, I got to thinking. Why is it so hard for me to buy factory ammo now? I just bought a handi rifle in 270 win and was gonna buy a cheap box of ammo just to see how it shot, well I ended up not doing it and decided to try and press some myself. I just cant bring myself once Im standing at the counter to actually buy factory ammo. Am I crazy? or just a reloading snob?? (yeah I know Im crazy) :D

I'm a reloading snob, I did buy some 22-250 ammo last year though, it was leftover and already discontinued. I'm afraid if I buy factory ammo I will like it, somewhere down the road they will discontinue that specific ammo. The exact reason I started reloading when Federal discontinued 165 Sierra Gamekings in 30-06 back in 1990.

Yes I do know they brought it back again.

It just depends in my case, if I see some of the premium stuff for a good price I;ll buy just because. For some calibers I dont shoot much , I will get facories for them.I lucked out with buying some re-man 223's awhile back, they shoot very well and I would be hard pressed to load them as cheap and as accurate. For the most part I hanload though.

Hey Mossy 270 130gr or 150 gr Fed Classic at Wally World for 9.99. Good stuff for hunting or burning ammo.

Mossy, I came across some 270 ammo. One with 130gr BT, and another with 130gr gamekings both loaded with 50gr-54gr of IMR4350. You ought to try these.

I know a guy that bought some factory ammo in 300 ultra mag, unloaded it measuring each charge in the process. The factory had a charge difference of 1 full grain high to low. This same guy shoots for precision which is why he unloaded them. He then reloaded the shells using the factory powder at an average grain weight. His gun will put 3 shots in one hole.

With that inaccuracy, why buy factory ammo?

I still buyfactory for my 223 I have some 52rn HPs from Black Hills that shot great so I never changed.

When I first bought my 243WSSM the brass was hard to find so I bought a box of Win 100grn PSP's to break in the gun and have some MT's to reload. I shot the 1st 5 under and inch and prob had no more then a 1.5 inch group shooting all 20 about as fast as I could load and shoot them(shot 10 then cleaned, then other 10). After retreiving the target I kinda wondered why I spent all that $ on dies and bullets etc.. with a group like this after spending 13$ for a box of factory stuff.Then I remembered how unexciting it was to shoot Win PSP's not that the deer would notice a difference between them andthe Nos Part. I was dying to load but there's just something about knowing I put the round together that satifys me.

Everytime I think about buying factory ammo at the store and notice the 30$plus a box for thePrimo stuff, Im happy to head back into my fotress of solitude room and pull on the ol' Rockchucker(and thats not anick name for my....nevermind).

I sure hope you're not crazy, because I'm the same way. I'm so bad, I am never even found in a line to buy factory ammo! If I can get new, empty unprimed brass for some cartridge or other, I usually can buy a set of dies for no more than the cost of a box of factory ammo!

And, I know I can load a box of ammo that will perform as well as, or better than, factory stuff. Now, this applies to rifle ammo only. I have never been able to beat factory .38 Special wadcutter match target loads. Maybe equal, but not beat......

Reloading is my absolute favorite thing to do. Could that be your problem also? Tom.
