The 7 mm Rem. Mag is an excellent cartridge for long distance and is a long action. The 7mm-08 is a cartridge with mild recoil and is a short action. The 7 mm WSM is a short action but isn’t very popular. I prefer short action at this time , so I would go with the 7mm-08 but wouldn’t mind having one of each...;)

I'd like one of each as well. I am partial to the .284 bullets. I just can't get enuf of them.

I really want to build a Remington 700 in 7mm WSM. Might be my next project after my AR is completed.

That 7WSM looks like a sweet caliber by lookin at ballistics charts but it seems to be dying off.

I have a Tikka T3 in a 7mm-08 and I love it. This round is not as popular so therefore if you need some rounds in a hurry, like if somehow yours were ruined while out in the field, you would not be able to go to the local Wal-Mart and pick some up. But to fix that all that you need to do is store some extrarounds seprate from yourothers. It also all depends on what you plan on using it for. The 7mm-08 it is a great dear and pronghorn round.

You left out the oldest, and possibly the best, of all the 7's - The 7X57mm Mauser!

Can I vote for you to build a 7mm STW. IMO if I would buy a custom or was graced with the knowledge of building a rifle I would want something not offered in every facoty rifle around.

Kinda like if I could rebuild engines, I wouldn't want to redo a 6 cyclinder. I'd do a 454 that shook the ground when it started up.

The 7X57mm is NOT OFFERED in every factory rifle around!

True but it doesnt offer anything the 7mm-08 doesnt already have. All of these rounds are great choices, just in my mind when you go custom you go big.

To be honest I was only looking at the 3 he mentioned.

7mm Mag is a great cartridge but long. The short mags are more consistent - or less varibale due to the shorter case - I have a 300 WSM that is accurate like a 308 but I do not see the 7mm shorts much.

Well, I am now partial to the 7mm WSM since I got one fer christmas. It really doesnt do much more that the ole 7mm rem mag does but it does have a few advantages. The sammi pressure for the rem mag is 61000 and the rating for the WSM is 65000. So it seems to give a little more leeway to the handloader. But do what you want. Just thought Id say my peace. EJ

I'd go with a 7mm-08, a 7mm Rem Mag and a .280 Rem.:)

If you handload, then toss in a 7x57.

If you have a 7mm Rem. Mag. in, say a Model 700 Remington and a 7mm WSM in the same type of action, they can both be loaded to the SAME pressure levels. And when the 7mm Rem. is loaded to the same levels as a 7mm WSM, it will out-perform the WSM because it holds MORE powder....... of course, this is assuming you select the correct powder. With IMR 7828, I get 3050 FPS with 175-grain bullets in my 26" barrel 7mm Rem Mag. Ruger No. 1.

Of course, I have no idea what the pressues are, but I get ten reloads out of a batch of cases with this load without primer pocket expansion, so I don't really CARE what the pressures are!

7mm rem mag b/c it is the overall best performer of the ones you listed for the .284 class bullets.

Since your building one for school it might be nice to build something other then you can buy off the shelf, little different but still has appeal. What about a .280rem AI. Not something you see everyday will offer performance gains over the 280 rem standard version(very close to the performance of the 7mm rem mag) and no factory chamberings of this kind-unique. You can shoot standard 280 rem cartridges, not getting the boost but appealing if selling to other than a handloader down the road, with the option to AI case use for the handloader.

Or like mentioned if you really want to step up the performance the 7mm STW would be something to consider as well.

Good luck
