405 Winchester
 

Does anyone have the newest Hornady Manual? I would like to get the info on loading the 405 Winchester. I saw the data in the new manual at a store but didn't pick it up yet. What is the SD of their 300 grain bullet and maybe one load. Thanks.

I needed a new squirrel gun;). There are getting to be lots of those saber tooth squirrel around here.

James, did North Dakota somehow get a heard of Cape Buffalo I havent heard about? :D What made you decide to get one of those?????

Well we do have a lot of regular buffalo:D. I bought this one mostly for the frame and butt stock. (Encore) I have an Encore in 7mm-08 with the pistol stock. This one was just like new and has the rifle stock but came with a 405 Winchester barrel. The price was right for the whole gun though. Saved about 200.00 compared to a new one. I had been eye balling a 444 Marlin but this old timer has about the same or a bit better ballistics as it has a Barnes 300 Grain and Hornady 300 grain spitzers available. Hornady makes the brass as well a factory ammo. It shoots the 300 grainers about 2200-2300 fps.

It was good enough for Teddy Rosevelt so it should work for me.;)He took all of Africa's DG's with the 405 in the 1895 Winchester. You never know when some Cape buffalo may try to sneak into ND for a winter Vacation.[&:]

I already ordered a Lead Sled.:D

If you decide to sell it let me know. I spotted a few Rhino, and one Tiger here in WV. Just kidding about the Rhino, but we did have a Tiger loose here. A circus truck wrecked, and the Tiger escaped for a few hours. It was quit amusing. Tom.

Assuming the bullet is .406" in diameter, the sd is: 300/7000/.164836 (.406 squared) = .2599 .

If possible, use 400-grain bullets in your .405. Their SD is much better at 400/7000/.164836 = .3466. This SD makes the .405 adequate for heavy, thick-skinned game.

(Our buffalo -[bison] may not be as hard to kill as a cape Buffalo, but it would not surprise me to find that they are! They certainly weigh as much, or more!)

Mossy. I will get the manual. I live in a one horse town so I can't get it here. We have about 50 buffalo right here in town but I don't think one better be shooting at them :D. This town is about 15000 people and you can buy anything in the world for your shotgun but the only gun shop in town wants to order everything as you need it. Gotta go 100 miles to buy anything. Can't waste gun money on books with no pictures.;)
