300 Win Mag
Guys I just got a new 300 win mag and I wanted to get your guys opinions on loads.
I am thinking of starting with 4831sc. Is this probably the best powder for this cartridge? |
RE: 300 Win Mag
I have had good results 7828 in 300's I load for.
4831 and RL22 should also work fine. As far as the best powder that depends on your rifle, bullet, etc. Only way is trial and error. |
RE: 300 Win Mag
elkhntr04, im using imr 7828, 215 federal primers, with 180 grain hornady btsp. I have had real good luck with this load.

RE: 300 Win Mag
I have had real good luck with 4831SC in conjunction with the 180 Nosler Accubond and Winchester LR primers. Shot well in several rifles.

RE: 300 Win Mag
Another powder that is often overlooked for the .300 Win Mag is IMR 4350. Although most of the slower powders can make 100 fps or so more speed, this powder can often shoot some really good groups - with some real narrow SD's of velocity. Particularly with lighter bullets - like 150 grains.

RE: 300 Win Mag
I like IMR 4350 and 180 NPs. Best accuracy and velocity for my Ruger 77.

RE: 300 Win Mag
I really thought about 4831sc behind 175 Berger VLD. For closer game maybe the 180 Accubond.

RE: 300 Win Mag
Quite a few folks lately are shooting these Berger VLD's for hunting bullets. The DVD "Beyond Belief" features, I understand, a 168 Berger VLD coming out of a 7MM wildcat similar in performance to a 7 STW. I used this bullet in a 7 Rem Mag this year a killed a cow elk at over 400 yards - bang/flop on a high shoulder shot. Accuracy, as you might expect, is generally as good as it gets with these match quality bullets.

RE: 300 Win Mag
It wasn't a speed load but it is very accurate.
165 Grain Accubond. I shot it over a chrony at about 2810-2830fps ![]() |
RE: 300 Win Mag
Roskoe,
I am definately going to shoot this rifle as far as I can keep her accurate. That was part of the reason for looking at those bullets. Should do great on mule deer. |
RE: 300 Win Mag
Didn't get to play around much with my new .300 Win this year before the scope went south. Right now I'm waiting on the scope to be returned. Before the scope wentbad, though,I was having very good luck with RL22. Accuracy was excellent with 165 gr. Ballistic Tips and Fed 215M's. When I get the scope back I'm going to start back withthe same powder and 180 gr. Sierra Matchkings.
I think 4831sc should be an excellent powder also. It works very well for me in my 7mm mag.You just gotta try different combos and see what works best in your rifle. |
RE: 300 Win Mag
best powder R 22. use 180gr bullets ,thats what your gunsbeen chambered to use.

RE: 300 Win Mag
I have found that alot of your big bore guns like the slower burning powders. I whould try some loads with imr 4350. im pretty sure you will find that this powder will work and perform very well. i am using 73.6grs, with the hornady 150gr innerbonds. still tuning a little but real close. good luck!

RE: 300 Win Mag
H4831SC is a good place to start. It's one of the better powders to use in the 300 Win. Mag. As far as the best powder I think if you took a poll that RL22 would probably win out especially with 180 gr. bullets. If you like the 200's you can try RL22, RL25, & H1000. Out of a 26" barrel 300 I reached a little over 2900 fps with good accuracy with RL25. This is one particular rifle I sold an have regretted it ever since.
