Bullets exploding in 270 WSM

My dad is shooting Hornady 150 gr SST.277 bullets in his 270 WSM. They have blown up 3 times out of three animals this year. All died quick, but he would like to eliminate this exloding performance.

What bullet will not explode in <100 yard shots and has a hard tip to prevent magazine damage? He would like this for game from Antelope to Elk. Shots are typically 0 - 500 yards max.

Yep, thats what happens when people use long range guns for your typical 50 yard kill. Partition, barnes will never fragment.Accubond would work too.

Not surprising. This year alone I recovered 3 bullets, or should I say jackets, from deer my mother killed with her 270 Win. Two were Sierra 130 gr Game Kings, one was a Nosler Accubond. All three had no lead cores.

If they are reloads, you could do the unthinkable and slow them down. Game kings are real bad for this. I would go with the Barnes TXS. If you don't reload, Federal loads them for the 270 WSM. I load the Sierra 130 grain Pro-Hunter which is a tougher bullet than the Game King. I load the 130 to 3000 fps Max.

I have also had problems with the Hornady SST in magnum .270's. Even at 400 yards, I had a bit too much expansion on a big whitetail buck. And on an elk at 150 yards, it just exploded without penetrating even 8". Used them once on antelope and was very favorably impressed - perfect expansion at 250 yards on this light boned speedster.

If you can find some, the original 130 grain Swift Scirocco is still the best bullet I have used in 35 years of hunting with the .270. Also very good is the 140 Accubond, the 150 grain Sierra BT, the 150 Hornady Interlock, and the 150 grain Speer Grand Slam. I mostly hunt elk, so these bullets may be just a tad on the tough side for deer.

For deer, the 140 Nosler Ballistic Tip should be about perfect.

Yeah, she only shoots factory ammo. Federal Premium. She does well with it.
I too like Barnes bullets. I handgun hunt mostly. Use an XP100 in 308 Win and mostly laod Barnes 150 gr (30-30) TSX. I'm pushing it at 2650 fps which is faster thanintended for that bullet, but I still don't have any break up.

James B is a very wise man. SLow them down, take roskoe's advice, and lastly, if you cant afford to take roskoe's advice and you reload, use hornady 130 grain interbond. I have been using them exclusivly this year and they dont blow up. They do expand quickly at high velocities but they seem to hold together. Another option might be to use the heaviest bullet you can get in that thing if It is only gonna be under 100 yards. Just a thought. EJ

I've been wondering how the Interbond .270 bullet works on game. My guns don't shoot them well at all, so I never got past the paper testing part of things.

yep what Roskoe said...............2 deer, 2 shots, and no lost meat for me with 140 Nosler BT's this year, and one was at 75 yards.

Core lokts and power points here and no problems with blown up or waisted meat. But then again I am just too cheap to spend the $25 and up a box of bullets to try those other high end bullets when I have never had problems with the cheapies. I dont take 200+ yard pot shots though since even with a 3X9 scope I just cannot see well enough to try it.
