7x57 vs 7-08

Question

With a modern rifleand with all things equal; like bullet type, weightand barrel length which cartridge out performs the other when loaded to their safe maximum pressure.

Thanks..

I've loaded for both cartridges and with equal barrel lengths and bullet weights, I've never seen much more than 20-30 fps. between the two cartridges, with all else being equal....

They are ballistic twins.

The key to it is that you have to handload the old 7X57 to see its full potential. (like most the mausers)

This is true. However, if you handload the 7X57mm, it has more potential than the 7mm08. The comparison is the same as exists between the 6mm Rem/.243 Win., the .257 Roberts/.25/308 Souper, etc.

57mm cases hold more powder, so MAX loads can always be develkoped that will outperform the 7mm 08 in any bullet weight. RULE: A case that holds more powder can always be loaded to outperform sone of lesser powder capacity. And, it will performbetter with 160 and 175-grain bullets than will the 7mm08, unless the latter is used in long actions that will permit the heavy bullets to be seated way out, effectively equalling the case capacity of the 7X57mm....
