Wrong Packaging?

I ordered a Lyman neck sizing die for a 7mm Rem Mag from Midway. It arrives and the package is labeled 7mm Rem Mag. When I run a 7mm Mag shell through the die it makes the whole case thinner in diameter and the neck is shoulder is rounded like a Weatherby shoulder. Could they have put a 7mm Wby die in the 7mm Rem. Package? Bear season starts Monday and we have no shells for this rifle made yet.

Did you check the die itself? It should have the caliber stamped right on it.

It says Neck Sizing 7mm and a couple of letters after that. The letters are not REM or WBY. I'm not sure what they mean. I'd have to call Lyman, I guess, to see what it is.

RE: Wrong Packaging?

I don't think so. The shoulder would be angled and the width of the cartridge would be similar to the Remington. My sized cartridge had a rounded shoulder (double radius) just like a Weatherby. The die was thinner than the cartridge and I don't think I could ram the whole cartridge. Noticably thinner. Almost like a .30-06 diameter. The die is in Sullivan County and I'm in Montgomery so I can't look at it now. Over the weekend I'll do more research. D&R in Nanticoke will have a sizing die in this afternoon.

It sounds to me like you are running the die down to far over the cases????????? This would smash the shoulders ,by pushing the neck down into the case.

The case meets resistance and becomes misshaped as soon as it meets the die. I tried backing the die all the way out so only 1 or 2 threads were holding it in. As soon as the case got to the die - same thing. I've only rammed the case up the die about 1/2 way at the most. It made the whole case more slender up to the point I stopped. I actually doesn't make any sense. If the shell isn't making it up more than half way up the die, why is the shoulder taking a new shape at all?

BarnesX.308, it was just a thought. I know you have been loading a while. Some times I forget the little things and thought you may have also.
Now back to the die ! Isn't Quiality Control,of big companies a joke ?

Mounting Man,

That's a good suggestion but unfortunately not the issue. I picked up another die and a box of factory ammo just in case. It's the old man's rifle and I'd hate to break the news to him that he's got no ammo. Whatever happened to that guy, Hawkeye? He used to ask some interesting reloading questions, like: "Hey! How much powder do you put in a .30-06 shell? Thanks. C ya." Those were the days.

I figured it out! I have a 7mm Mauser Die in a 7mm Remington Magnum box.
