243 hand loads question
 

Well I just purchased brand new Remmington ADL in 243. Anyone have any faorite loads, factory or reloads, that might speed up my sight in?

I have a Ruger MK II .243 and it likes the following:
100gr Hornady BTSP
41.5gr IMR4350
WLP

Thanks for the replies. I purchased a Remmington 700 adl in 243 and while I didn't have time to make some loads I bought a couple of boxes of Federal Power-Shock 100 grain soft points. Man do they shoot great. After starting out at 25 yards, then going to 50, and finallyI 'm shooting 1/2 dollar 3 shot groups at 100 yards.

I'll tell you what those Power Shoks shoot so well that I'm taking the 243 out on opening day. At Bass Pro a box of 20 shells cost $9.99, that's only 5o cents per. What a deal.

Hey yall I got a question.

I loaded some 243's last week and shot the trying out two different powders. IMR 4350 and Win 760 (both starting loads). I'm using the Hornady 100gr.BTSP. I loaded them to the cannalure with just a ever so slight crimp. I shot two five shot groups with each load. They were about inch and a half to two inch groups.

My question is this, How can I tighten up the load? I want to keep them light as I can as this loadwill mainly be used by my 10 year old girl in her single shot. What tricks can I try before moving up in powder charge? I compared the length to factory Remingtons loads and mine are shorter, but I seated the bullets to the center of the canalure. SO I dont think I can move it much. I'll get my calipers and check the length when I get back to the bench this week.

Ive never laoded rifle ammo before only 9mm and 38 target ammo. As long as it went bang I was happy. Now I want groups[8D]

Mike,

IMHO, IMR-4350 doesn't do well with reduced loads. I've always gotten the best accuracy with loads near the top of the book loads or just over book with this powder. But there is a way to load pretty good reduced loads using H-4895. Go to the Hodgdon website and look for the reduced loads for beginners section. It will give you a good deal of info. This is what I did when I was starting Katie with her .243 Win with reduced loads. It worked quite nicely for her.

Slower powders sometimes experience a situation where the reduced load results in a detonation when fired.. Evidently there's not a lot of technical data about what happens, just the knowledge that it does happen.

Three things. 1. Why are they shorter? Need to figure this out.
2. Are you resizing?
3. Maybe you should trynot crimping them and seat the bullet just to the beginning of the cannalure.

For Mike Bell, Check your C.O.L. and load a dummy round to find out where the projo hits the lands then drop back a little. Just because there is a cannilure doesn't mean that is where you load it to. Also shouldn't have to crimp.

Just remember your magazine box length dictates how far you can set the bullet off the lands, unless you want to possibly wind up with a single-shot rifle the first day of deer season like I did once............I learned my lesson real quick.

My 12 year old shoots 85g sierra hp's for play, and 85g TSX's for deer.....out of a stock BDL.

Federal hulls, Federal primers, 36.8 grains of RL15.

That loadshoots, stupid good.

Both bullets, with thatcharge weight,yeild sameusable trajectoryout to 300.......no frets.

My old Savage 110 loves the good old Hornady Interlock 100 gr bullet over 40.5 gr if IMR 4350. This load is no where near the max load, is extremely accurate (in my rifle) and drops deer like lightening. This rifle/load combo has accounted for about 25 deer now and only 1 needed a second anchoring shot.
