I am wanting to reload for my browning .280 with the boss system. I was wondering if anyone out there has loaded for this weapon and what loads you would use. Also where would you set the boss system at to be most accurate?

I reload for my 280 also but I seat them pretty much .020 off the lands using a stoney point comparator. In the case of your A bolt you will have to seat them at the same length as factory loaded ammo. For deer I would use the Hornady 139 grain bullet which works real well and then the Nosler BT either should go about 3000 out of your A bolt with carefull handloads. Use Nosler #4 manual and it has some good loads in there ...My 280 likes IMR4831 H4831 and Rel19 and shoots pretty much anyone of those three extremely well. Finding the right powder is 1/2 the battle and with those 3 powders you can't go wrong. For Elk and larger game I use the 160 grain partition loaded up with IMR7828 not sure of the exact load but it is in the 58 grain range . Better look it up in the Nosler manual. It shoots about 2900 fps with that and absolutely wrecks Elk at all reasonable ranges. I was kind of surprised myself when I took a Bull with the 280 penetration was superb and it did everything it had to do. Your on your own with the boss it's trial and error. Stay with Remington brass as awful(sloppy) as it is and keep an eye on it. If you want real quality brass you can buy Norma brass which is tougher and will last longer. Thats the stuff I load up and take hunting using the Remington for target practice. Have fun with it .

My Model 70 really likes Reloader 22. I have had good results with 150 gr noslers, both bt and partitions. Right now it is zeroed with 140 gr barnes x on 54 gr of Re22. Winchester magnum rifle and accurate arms 3100 have worked good too. The 280's I have fooled with arent very finicky. But they all have shot reloader 22 well. Imr 7828 gives high velocities, but I cant get very good groups with it. good luck

Rel22 works well also Larry338 ...I found IMR7828 to be an eye opener with 160 grain bullets and I was getting exceptional groups with it but there was a lot of stiff recoil especially from a 700 KS.

I reload for the .280 also,IMR 4350 is a great powder for accuracy...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I agree with PA Jack IMR 4350 is the powder of choice for me. It works well in all of the 30-06 based cartridges.

My Ruger #1 seems to favour H4831. Not the fastest powder out there but she likes it. I use the 162 gr btsp.

I just bought a .280 today and was wondering what I would try in it ,thanks everyone for the info .I couldn't have asked for better timing now I don't even have to post a question..

I jsut did a whole bunch of work ups on this cartridge this weekend, Here is what I had

nosler Combined Technology Partition gold 160 Grain loaded with both RL 19, IMR 4350 5 shot groups were in the 1.5&quot; range

Nosler Fail Safe Combined Tecnology 160 gr. same powders

RL19 had a 3 shot group of .48&quot; and IMR 4350 had group of .78

Barnes X XBT 150Grain, same powders groups were in the 1.5+&quot; range


This was at an indoor range and the fail safes reacted very well in my ruger m77 mountain rifle (shorter barrel)

Anyone hunted with these fail safes? like them? hate them? going on an elk hunt next week and plan on using them

Fail Safes are a bullet made by Winchester. Iam using the Combined Technology ones made in conjunction with Nosler.

A mountain rifle is a shorter barrel and smaller diameter barrel. Thus it is lighter.

I personally think that the best rifle for the money on the market is a Tikka. The bad part is they dont make a .280.......but I already have one so that is not a big deal to me.


With the Fail Safes (160 gr.), I find that they are flying identical as the Combined Technology Nosler Ballistic Tips (150 gr.)

they are both very accurate....I was looking for any real world experience on the fail safe bullets in the field.

I have never used them in the field but the closest experiences I can relate are those of two acquaintances who live in Wyoming in Riverton. They use the 140 grain in a 270 win and hunt Elk and Deer with that combo and regularly get complete pass throughs on Elk not to mention deer. That is wide open country so there is a lot of opportunity for a long shot and none feel undergunned with their outfits as a matter of fact they sneer at the non residents(me) packing big magnums. One has given up handloading because the winchester load shot so well thru his gun.
