What number shell holder should I use for284 Winchester?

Standard .30/06-.308 shell holder. I think it is RCBS #2, but couldn't swear to it.

My Speer Reloading Manual states RCBS shell holder #3. Good luck.

As`stated the RCBS is a # 3 while the Lee is #2 and I beleive Redding is a #6

In general is it a good idea to match your dies and shell holders by manufacturer?

I figured that the shell holders were consistent across the board.

Yes, Tom, it is. This is becausethe thickness of the shellholder lip and the depth of the sizing chamber in the die are designed to give you the correct headspace when used together. Some makes of dies may have chambers that aretoo shallow or too deep when used with a shellholder of another make. Of course, this only applies when you screw the die into the press to the point that it touches the shellholder when the ram is all the way up.
