Hot weather shooting.
Anyone have any thouthts on how mutch shooting in hot weather will effect FPS in any given hand load.
Say the bullet is traveling at ( 7MM-08)2700 FPS on a cold day, how fast would it travel on a hot day? ( 7 Mil Mag 3200Cold day ?Hot day ?) Would it have a great effect on POI or accuracy ? Cold day 50 , Hot day 90 +. It is getting really hot here in Fl and I was just thinking about going to the club and going shooting over the 4Th Holiday. |
RE: Hot weather shooting.
its hard to say exactly but ive seen asmuch as a 100 fps increase in my 22-250 loads, but that also could have been partly my chronos fault since it seems to give different readings at different times of the day and if its sunny or overcast.

I know I have built loads in the deep winter at 10F, one in particular was RL22 and 180gr TBBC in a 300RUM, and in summer on a 85F degree day it locked up in my chamber. So I was close to max. |

I've had the same problem using the Federal High Energy loads. They shot fine when it was cooler than 70, but when I shot them in the 90 deg. range, they locked up my rifle. I don't have a chrono., so I don't know what kind of velocity change I had. |

Wow, factory loads locking up. Kinda scary.

RE: Hot weather shooting.
The last load I worked up was for my 7-08, and the data was done in mostly 80+ degree weather. The load that shot consistantly best at that time was 47.5 gr. IMR 4350, 139 Horn. S.P. When the weather turned colder before deer season, that load opened up enough that I tried 48.0 gr. which had shot decent in the hot weather, but not as good as the 47.5. The 48.0 now turned out to be the load that shot consistantly better groups, and was what I settled on. No fps. data available,no S.D. No sticky bolt, no flattened primers or black rings around them. Just holes in the paper like I like 'em.

They were those Federal Premium HE rounds. The ballistics on their website put the HEs in a 270 at close to the same velocity as a 7mm Rem. Mag. All I know is they HURT when I shot them. I sold the 270 shortly after that and got a 300WM to chase elk with. I don't think it kicks as bad as those damned HE loads.

RE: Hot weather shooting.
How about temp... Do you think your gun shoots better in the cooler temp of fall verses the hight temps of summer???
|
RE: Hot weather shooting.
in the summer i usually drop the charge about 1.5 grs. I think I get slightly better accuracy in cooler weather. Good luck.

RE: Hot weather shooting.
Went to the range yesterday and shot some loads I worked up... It was driving me crazy. I would shoot 2 rounds touching then I shoot one 2 inchs out[:o]Shot some Fusion rounds and I was just about to say screw the reloader when they would start the same thing... I was thinking that maybe it was just due to the barrel heating up... It takes steel a pretty long time to cool off... Christ it would take all day to shoot 20 rounds
