Barnes TSX bullets
I've been hearing good things about this bullet as far as accuracy goes...
Has anybody had any good groups with these bullets and if so what cal?gun... |
RE: Barnes TSX bullets
The 180gr tsx averages 5/8" in both of my 300 ultramags.

Mr Longbeard
I have had awesome results with Barnes TSX bullets. As far as punching paper that is. I have yet to shoot at an animal with it. I am shooting a Weatherby 30-378 with 200 gr TSX. Chronographed at approx 3200 fps with 101.2 grains of RL 25. I am going to have dinner and will post the pics when I get done. So far my groups are .96 at 200yds, 1.74 at 300 yds,and 1.93 at 400 yards. That is the only bullet I can get to group that tight. Nosler Part. are scattered. Tried some Sierra bullets as well and wasn't impressed. I am getting anxious to put the hurt to something. Conclusion: these bullets are very accurate. |
RE: Barnes TSX bullets
Here was my groups at 200 yards with 300RUM I used to have. I was happy with em.

RE: Barnes TSX bullets
I've used the 165 gr. in my former .300 Weatherby, the 140 gr. in my 7mm Rem mag and the 85 gr. in my son's .243. Accuracy has beenvery good and the two deer I've shot with them went down quick with lots of internal damage.
I enjoy hunting with magnum rifles and more often than not my shots on deer are at ranges of 50 yards or less. I wanted a bullet that would behave predictably on these high velocity impacts and the TSX has so far worked perfectly, though of course my experience is somewhat limited. |
RE: Barnes TSX bullets
I've sworn by them for the majority of my hunting now since I went too the 150 Lazerhead (a tweaked TSX) a few years ago in my Lazzeroni Warbird. From my 26" Sako TRG it sticks em .5"@ 100yds and 3.5" @ 400yds. Despite my best effort I have NEVER been able to blow one up or keep one inside an animal. I shot the 130 Xs in this gun before the TSXs came out and the terminal performance on game was identical but they weren't as accurate as the TSX.
Velocity wise should be somewhere in the low 3700fps range from my Sako (the bullets are NP3 plated) and from a big buck double shoulder shot @ 45yds too many deer and 1 antelope near 400yds they have "done the magic" with lightning fast kills. I simply think that for a high velocity round NO bullet on the market can compare too the TSX. I have a few other mags as well and am in the stages of gathering TSX ammo for them as well. "Texas heartshots" are very predictable and easily carried out with the Barnes'. I even did one at over 300yds and there was nothing to do but look at a dead deer and get out my skinning knife. RA |
RE: Barnes TSX bullets
In the .30-06 and 330 Win Mag the 180 gr TSX are the most accurate bullets fired from them. I've tried Nosler BT and Accubonds and Sierra Game Kings which were satisfactory but the TSX is far more accurate. I'm waiting for their new manual to come out in spring before I try them in the 270 and 7mm-08.
If you contact Barnes, they can email you data for the TSX in certain cartridges if they have it available (they don't have yet for the 7-08or the 270). |
RE: Barnes TSX bullets
Worked up a load in a 270 wsm useing the 130 tsx last year for a hog hunt, shot very well on paper and worked on the hog too.Shot this 185 lb hog in the throat at 150 yds.
Went with 66.5 grs of IMR 4831. ![]() ![]() |
RE: Barnes TSX bullets
haugenna,
How do you like the 30-378?? Does it kick as much as people say?? The balistics on them are better then ANYTHING except the Lazzeroni. |
RE: Barnes TSX bullets
jeepkid...
This could open up another can of worms, but since you asked ME, I will give you the short version. I like mine a lot. I reload for it so it reduces the cost of ammo. The weatherby accubrake reduces recoil to a small poof, about that of a .243. I always use muffs on plugs at the range and banded plugs in the field. It has been said that these guns are barrel eaters. So far this year I have put approx 250 rounds through it for a grand total of approx. 400 rounds. It still has held its accuracy. It is a little overkill but it has been a fun rifle to play with. Are you thinking about getting one??? |
RE: Barnes TSX bullets
I fired a sako trg-s in 30-378 and the recoil wasnoticeably harsher than my 300ultramags despite only producing about 80fps more.

RE: Barnes TSX bullets
I had great success with a 168tsx round through my Model 70 in 300WSM.
Below is Elk and recovered bullet from inside of opposite shoulder from a quartering away 250 yard shot. The recovered bullet weighed 167 grains. |
