Loading to the lands to late?

I just got my reloader last week and after lots of practice with powder measuring I decided to load up alot of test rounds. I loaded up fifty rounds of BL-C2 5 shots each of 39 grain Blitzking and 40 grain Hornady vmax. With staring loads from the sugested starting to the max. And I also did the same with H4895. So now I have 100 rounds loaded of test ammo. After all this work I read the other day about loading to the lands. And I ask the guy at work who has been helping me alot and he said that it helps alot, buthe said to be safe and not touch the lands cause of a pressure spike. My question is can I shoot all these to determine the best load and then load to the lands only to improve the best one? Or will I have to shoot and reload all and retest with loading longer? Sorry so long and thanks!

RE: Loading to the lands to late?

Go ahead and shoot your rounds like they are, and determine which load shoots best. Using all the components you used with your best load, (start atMIN.), and experment with O.A.L to see if you can better that load. Go to www.stoneypoint.com and check out their O.A.L. gauge for more information. Good luck.

RE: Loading to the lands to late?

By loading your bullet to within .001 of your lands, your accuracy should improve. Your powder charge is also going to be reduced because it is going to start to reach peak pressures quicker. The bullet entering the rifling creates resistance and it requires more pressure to move it. If the bullet is touching the rifling the pressure rate is insane, and can under the right conditions, litterally blow your head off. I've seen 7mm mags blown apart. I've seen 30 30's blown apart. I've seen shotguns blown apart. I've seen 357's blown apart. You've got the right idea, now "giterdone"
