300 wsm to far away from lands to be accurate?
 

I'm starting to reload for my 300 wsm and dicovered that the longest you can make the cartrage to fit in the magazine is the overall length listed in the book. It ends up beeeing pretty far from the rifleing. Has any one had any accuracy problems related to this?

It depends. Sometimes with my 300RUM, I found loading deeper increased my accuracy. I was .02" away from the rifling most of the time with that gun.

It makes a difference with different bullets too. I mainly use 130 Nos Bt in my 270WSM (A-bolt also) and they are all but touching the lands and shoot under an inch and still fit in the clip.

I also have tried the 130grn Barnes XLC bullets and they like to be away from the lands. I cant remember the exact measurements.

Also if you havea pointed bullet like a BT it will be alot longercompared to a HP or SoftPt of the same weight. Soa Soft or Hollow ptcan actually be seated out further but still fit in the clipand be closer to the lands because the fatter part of the bullet that actually hits the lands is closer to the front of the bullet compared to a BT. Thats a little confusing so I hope you understand what I meant.

You know if this was all real easy it wouldnt be much fun.

I have run into the same situationwith many Browning A-Bolts I have loaded for. Don't despair, the last BrowningI loaded for was a A-Bolt Medallion .270 Win. using a 150 gr. Nosler Partition which grouped 1.75" off hand at 100 yds. Just keep trying different combinations. Good luck.

The throat of the .300 Winchester Short Magnum (and the other WSM's) is interesting, mostly because it doesn't exist.The rifling starts right in front of the chamber's neck, which not only keeps overall length of cartridges short enough to fit in a 3.05" magazine, but eliminates any worry about inaccuracy resulting from "bullet jump."This non-existent throat is one reason factory-model WSM's of any caliber tend to shoot very well.(It's also why chambering a WSM in a longer action is mostly a waste of time.A local gunsmith has already built several .300 WSM's on Mauser and other longer-magazine actions, because the boys want to "seat the bullet out to the lands."But they won't be able to seat bullets out any farther, because the non-throat won't let 'em.If you want to use a longer action, why not use the .300 Winchester "Long?"It achieves the same ballistics, or slightly better, and despite what you've read, doesn't kick any harder than the .300 WSM.)
