Powders for reloading 222 Remington?

I’m getting ready to reload some shells for my 222 Remington and would like to know which powders would work best for 40 to 50 gr bullets on this little cartridge. I know every rifle is different but this would be just a guide line. Thanks.

My .223 likes Winchester 748 and IMR 4320. Those both seem to work well in many .22 centerfires. You might also try some IMR 4064.

I have used IMR 4198 and AA 2230 with good results in the past.

trailer,

Several powders have a reputation for good accuracy in a .222. BLC-2,all of the 4198s work well. But if I were starting from scratch with a .222 today, the first powder I'd pick up would be H-Benchmark. This is an extruded powder with kernels so small, it almost looks like a ball powder. It meters great and gave me outstanding accuracy and velocities. This is a newer powder in the Hodgdon Extreme line that is meant for the benchrest shooters. I had a good load worked up with H-4198 when Benchmark came out. After a few test loads I was using Benchmark.

Back when the .222 was the sweetheart of the benchrest crowd, IMR4198 was the powder of choice. Other powders were tried, of course, but just about everyone started with 4198.

I get excellent accuracy and velocity in my 223 and 223 AI with 748. The 222 is only slightly smaller case volume. BLC-2 should also work well.

Hi Trailer;

I have always used IMR 4320. I experimented with IMR 3031 for a bit, but got better results with 4320.

Good luck,
CE
