favorite .270 elk and muley bullet

Out to 400 yards what are favorites as far as current bullets for either animal. I am looking at accubond, interbond, interlock and maybe something barnes has to offer. Can I go to 130 gr. Or should I stick with 140 to 150 grainers. Flat shooting is also something I am going to try to stick with. Is there a bullet I am missing that is a good performer?

I really like the downrange performance of the 130 grain Swift Scirocco. If that one won't group well, then take a look at the 140 Nosler Accubond.

The barnes tsx is available in 130gr and it will out penetrate and retain more weight than most other bullets. It can normally be driven to higher velocity than most other bullets with the same pressure.

but isnt that because they reduce surface area through grooves or something????

I would go with the Barnes 150 gr. TSX FB. This bullet has a decent SD and BC, and since it is a TSX you should obtain good velocity for retaining down rangeenergy. Good luck.

In my book it is really hard to beat the Nosler 130 grain Partition. It performs through all the ranges and wide span of velocities.

I load it with 4350...

I do think the np is a hard bullet to beat too. However in open contry shouldn't you look for a bullet more of a boat tail design. Or is that really not as important as I think?

Mind you this is only my personal opinion and I think I have done a my share of hunting with my poor man's magnum (270), but I think Terminal Performance is more important than the boat tail. Punching paper give me a boat tail - taking animals give me a bullet that MIGHT not be quite as accurate but has MAXIMUM Terminal Performance.

I have settled on the 130 because of ballistics, it is quite a curve in fact sometime compare to a Remington 7mm mag shooting a 170 grain bullet you will see what I mean. I can quote you any thing off the top of my head it has been along time since I was really into that stuff but the information is available.

The Nosler will mushroom with a wider range of velocities than any of the other bullets including the Barnes. The 270 -130 is about as flat as you can get. I must admit I have never taken game at 400, one elk at 225 anda few whitetail at 100+ but that is about the extent of my long range shots.

Have fun - loading - shooting - hunting...
