7mm Mag. powder suggestions ?

What powders have you had good results with reloading 7mm mag.

RE: 7mm Mag. powder suggestions ?

to achieve maximum velocity RL 22 and IMR 4831 are good places to start. IMR 4350 will produce lower velocities, but many times better accuracy. LIke anything else its a trade off.

H4831, H1000......end of story
RR
I tried H-1000 and I couldnt for the life of me get a decent velocity out of it. Pushing a 160 gr bullet I could barely get 2800 fps. With RL 22 I can push a 160 gr bullet at about 3100. Different guns I guess.

*edit, checked my records after I posted, H-1000 gave me 2725 and RL22 gave me 3060.

R-22 has been the best performer for me in the 7mmremmag.

RL22, IMR4831 & IMR7828 (especially for the 160 gr bullets) has worked well for me interms of velocity and accuracy in my 7 mags. Haven't tried the H4831SC but also hear good things about it for the 7 mag.

Niorma's N205, and MRP; IMR 7828 (created for the 7 Mag!), H4831, and RE 22.

H1000. I get about 3090 fps with a 20 fps velocity deviation with this when shooting 139 Hornady SST's.

RE: 7mm Mag. powder suggestions ?

I agree with Mossy. For the 160 gr. and up my favorite is the RL-22 and for the 150 gr. down the IMR 4831 seems to work the best with my rifle.

RE: 7mm Mag. powder suggestions ?

Just make sure you get them seated deep enough.....do you have a OAL gauge? If so great.....if not, then stop where you are and buy one. Next to the chronograph, this is the reloaders most important tool. Regards, Rick.

I've had really good luck with IMR 7828. I've never failed to find a sub MOA load with any of the bullets I've tried when using this wonderful powder. Here is a5 shot groupI shot recently, thebullet is a140gr Nosler Ballistic Tip launched at 3350fps. It was shot on a not so good day, note the wind speeds on the target. I'm not sure if shot 3 was me or the wind but I did make a small correction after the third shot to center it up. I didn't get a picture of the 200 yard target but it was still under 2" despite the wind.

Good luck with whatever you end up with.

I would like more info on your load. The IMR book gives the following data:

140 GR. NOS PART
IMR 7828
.284"
3.250"
64.0
2867
50,000 PSI
69.0
3095
59,200 PSI
You are over the posted speed limit of 3095 by 255'/sec. This is a huge difference. I'm getting 3160 out of mine with RL22 max load. I have a Tikka with a 24 inch barrel. I back the bullet 50 thou's off the lands to keep the pressure down. Regards, Rick.

RE: 7mm Mag. powder suggestions ?

I was somewhat surprized by the results also. Some of the difference is the fact that I have a 26" barrel, my friend uses almost the exact load (.5gr more powder) and only gets about 3200 to 3250 out of his 24" barrel. I am seating the bullet .030" off the lands, I have to because at .010" off the lands the cartridge will not fit into the magazine. I'm also using fire formed cases neck sized only to get the max capacity of the case. Set up this way the cases will hold almost 80gr of 7828 to the bottom of the neck. The bullet is seated such that the boat tail is the only thing below the neck which gives me around 95% loading density. In my gun I started getting pressure signs at 72gr on warm days (I always work up loads to check for pressure on warm days) so 71.5 is what I consider max during the colder days of hunting season. The load shot well at .5gr above and below this but really shines where I have it.

BTW,when I first worked up this loadIMR had on the web site a 140gr load using 72gr of 7828 as max but they have removed it since then.

The other thing to remember is that each rifle is an individual and may react differently than the test barrels used for the loads listed in the manuals. This is why manuals from different companies often have different max loads, sometimes several grains of powder different. So work up each load carefully and consult more than one manual to ensure your in the safe zone.

I hope this answered your question. Be safe and enjoy the art of customized loads for your gun.

Thanks for the data. I think I'll stick with my RL22. 3160 is plenty fast. I'm also shooting 3 inch groups at 400 yards....doesn't get much better than that.....oh by the way, I've been reloading since 1960 and will stay safe.:DRegards, Rick.

Sounds like you have a great load also. I've thought several times about trying the RL22 or RL25 in my 7mm, I just have had such good luck with the 7828 that I haven't seen much need for experimenting further.

Have a great day.

I WILL ASUME YOUR TALKING ABOUT THE REMINGTON VERSION. IN IT I HAVE HAD EXCELENT RESULTS WITH IMR 4350 NEAR MAX LOADS WITH 140 GRAIN SIERRA PRO HUNTERS, THIS IS IN A RUGER NO. 1. I HAVE ALSO HAD THE SAME RESULTS FOR THE WIN. 7 SHORT IN A STAINLESS MODEL 70'. BOTH OF THESE LOADS ARE KEEPING GROUPS FOR THREE SHOTS BETWEEN .500 AND .750 OF AN INCH.

I was cheap a few years ago and bought some new(not pulldown) WC-872. The load data is the same as H-870. I love this powder. I load my 7mm Rem Mag with all that will fit in the case 79grs and it pushes all bullets fast and true. I only payed $36.00 for 8lbs + has mat and I have already ordered another 8lbs. This is great stuff and I have also found loads for my 280,243,and the 338. Plan to try a bunch of other loads this summer. -----Jovan

RL22 with Nosler 160g Accubonds. Shoots right around MOA out of my Tikka. I like Federal Gold Match primers with that combo too. The great thing about reloading is you can always try something different. I used to use IMR 4831 and still do for my wife's 270. But the RL22 works better in my 7mm Rem. Mag.

Here's a couple targets from last fall. Both are 5 shot groups with the load listed above, 100 yards, over the hood of my truck. I'm seating about 0.020" to 0.030" off the lands.

My pal re-loads for his and I think he uses 4831. We havent clocked them yet but I am guessing that he is getting 3000 or so out of his interbond 160 grain. EJ
