im going to reload acople dozen rouns of 270 win. for a friend of mine. he sweares by the round nose variety , i talked himinto the spire points . hornaday 160 s he shoots a 270 win. remington 700 bdl any opinons

yeah, tell him to swear by something else. What is he hunting? what kind of terrain? If he is hunting whitetail deer, go with a barnes TSX or a nosler accubond bullet in about 130 grains, the 270 has the best ballistics with 130 grain bullets. Round nose bullets dont fly through the air as well as the spire or poly tip bullets. As well, a boat tail construction is preferable. EJ

I personally would use 130gr to 140gr bullets in the 270win and they certainly would not have round noses.

As previously mentioned 130gr or 140 gr. would do the trick, as for round nose. The only round nose I could find from Hornady is the 150 gr. They don’t make anything in a heavier bullet for the 270.

Round nose bullets work very well. They expand much more reliably than spitzers, at a wider range of velocities. However, as someone mentioned, they are aerodynamically inferior to the spitzer type (they have an inferior "ballistic coefficient"). RN's are best used at shorter ranges, from 0 to 200 yards.

At one time ,I may have agreed with you .However after using the nosler ballistic tip extensivelyand havingseeing the results of the accubond and interbond on game,I believe that they expand every bit as reliably.

I personally wouldn't use the roundnose either - but its kinda hard to convince someone who has used the factory Remington 150 grain roundnose Core Lokt for woods hunting - and had consistent success with it.

Nosler Partition is available in 160/.277 but not sure why he would need these for deer hunting?? I agree the 130-140's are all I have used for deer hunting in the 270. I had excellent results from the Hornady 140gr BTSP. I would also look at the 130 gr Interbond or the spire points of 130-150 if he wants to shoot hornady. By far my favorite deer bullet in my 270 was the Nosler Ballistic Tip, deadly accurate and always reliable. So you could also try the 130 or 150 gr SST if your wanting to stick with Hornady but similar design.

RN Bullets have been killing game for years. If your friend likes to use them, good luck to him.

Your completly right, but you must admit, it isnt the best hunting bullet. Heck, you can easily send whitetail to heaven with a round nose unjacketed lead cast bullet from your basement. I just think it is a shame to not use technology and get the most out of your rifle. EJ

Nuttin wrong with roundnose. In the big scheme of things, its really a nonissue. shoot I have even take about a doz deer with roundnose 150gr. why? Back in the day, I had them lying around. Wanted to shoot them off.

Most if not 95% of all hunters I would say will not be able to make a field shot over 200 yards anyway. so if he wants roundnose, so be it.
