7mm-08 - Whitetail/Black Bear/ Hog Bullet?
 

I just got a new Rem 700 Mtn LSS in 7MM-08 this spring and would like to find one load that would be good for Whitetail, Black Bear, and Hogs.

I hunt in the mountains of NW Arkansas primarilly for Whitetail; however, you always stand a chance of coming across a black bear or a big hog. ( took a nice black bear this past season on the first day of muzzleloader deer season.) Where we hunt shots over 200 Yds would be rare with most being at 150Yds or less.

I reload and so far have tried 140Grn Sierra Game Kings (3/4"@100Yds) and 150Grn Ballistic Tips (1-1 1/2"@100Yds). I just loaded up some 140Grn Accubonds but haven't got to shoot them yet and just picked up some 140Grn Hornady Interlocks. I'm also planning of trying some 140 & 150Grn Partitions and some 154Grn Hornady Round Nose.

Right now, depending on how well they shoot, I'm leaning toward either the partitions or the accubonds.

What 7MM-08 bullet / bullet weight would you recommend as a one size fits all for deer/bear/hogs?

In most scenarios like this, it is recommended that you load for the toughest animal you expect to encounter - and expect a pass through on the deer. I would look at one of the bonded bullets - 150 Scirocco, Accubond, Trophy Bonded Bear Claws. Even though any of these should hold up on a bear or hog, they should also expand fast enough to put down a whitetail quickly with a lung shot. Sierra BT's and Ballistic Tips are great deer bullets - not tough enough for bruins or porkers, IMO.

I think I would try a Barnes 160 gr. XLC. Good luck.

I'd give the 154 grain Hornady a try. ;)

The Nosler partitions will work the best at the widest velocity spread of any of the bullets mentioned here. Most bonded bullets won't open well at lower velicity, and a softer bullet like the Hornandy or Sierra doesn't work well at the higher velocities.

The NP's work well at high and lower velocities, so you have it ALL covered!!!

I'd use 140 NP's for everything you described in a 7-08 and "know" that they will work!!

I would use a 140gr Barnes Tripple Shock X bullet. That should be a good bullet for everything you listed and it will be flatter than the 160s.

I shoot a 280 Remington so this will apply to your 7MM-08. I used the 140 gr. B-Tip for a number of years until we started killing alot of feral hogs on our property and I wasn't satisfied with the B-Tip performance at close range on 150-200# hogs. I switched to the 140 gr. TSX and I'm impressed. At a range of a little over 80 yards I shot a boar that on cattle scales weighed 311#. I shot the boar a little below the tail as he was facing away from me. The bullet came out the front and took the lower jaw with it. Needless to say the hog never moved. Over my chrony I'm just under 3000 fps with this load. I'm sure out of your 7MM-08 if you have at least a 22" barrel you will get around 2800 fps. At the distances you listed you will have enough velocity for good bullet expansion.

You've got 'em. Shots not over 200yds., for deer, blk. bear and hogs recommend the 154gr. Hornady Round Nose. If that doesn't shoot well in your rifle then look at the
140gr. Nosler Part. or Trophy Bondeds.
