RE: Quebec Winter Caribou Hunting
I can budget driving time from Pittsburgh to Buffalo (Niag Falls) What time should I budget from there to Matagami. I'm budgeting 12 hours from Matagami to camp.
ORIGINAL: Colorado Bob
This is coming together !! I downloaded the firearms form 909 today. The map of the caribou is becoming more clear--I can see the road where the camps are, the Polaris River, resivour---I'm assuming the numbersare the hunting units.

THe migration looks higher to me than last year and it is also warmer than last year. Look like the FRH is staying near the Bay by Lac Claire. Alot of the movement from both heards is still North in the 17 OCT 05 post. Tuesdays post should tell us alot.
They like to either swim or walk on the rivers and if itis in between I think they will wait for colder weather. Its is just now getting below freeze during the day - 40F today and looking at higher 20's the rest of the week in area 22B.
Our hopefor a DEC 04 hunt is to hit the heards in the middle.

YOu can also download the hunting manual for QC - has all the rules, areas, etc.
http://www.fapaq.gouv.qc.ca/en/faune/caribou/
This is also a good site for the St James Bay Area, including the taiga road.

Good luck on your hunt and maybe I will see you on the road!

What a great thread! I will be hunting through Northern Caribou Adventureswith two buddiesthe third week of Novemeber this year The 20th through the 23. This trip is coming up fast! A question for those that have been there over this time period, should I degrease my rifle for this time period?
Also.......roughly how far from the road did you guys go before you set up? Should I invest in some snow shoes? We are planning on taking up plastic sled to pull out any game.
Thanks!
