"Mad Chemist" Nice photos, Thanks for sharing them. What cabin number is that (14?) Looks like the same one we stayed it that reeked of diesel fuel !

Yup, good ol' #14. We stayed there for the first night, then had to move all our schtuff to another cabin for the rest of our stay. We filled our tags too quickly, but it was an experience nonetheless. I don't think I'd do it again- there are alot of other hunts I'd like to attempt. We got lucky in terms of timing and weather, so odds are if we went back it would only be worse than what we experienced. We were there ~Dec. 4th or so. The animals seemed to be moving south/west, as we seemed to see more animals further south on the ride home compared to the ride up.

Thanks for the answer mc. We are to leave saturday dec 17 and go back.

From the map yesterday looks like we could be in trouble. All gone sw and not in the zone. Alot have gone north east too. It's a long drive if they have left. Doesn't do any good to call cause they lie to you. Hopefully someone that just got back this week will post here before friday.

TERRY the last time i was up there there was some talk of a road going through. i think the greediness of the power companies and the increase in need for cheap electric will eventually make a road happen maybe not all too soon but it would cost pennies on the return to harness that resource. i see many outfitters including MIRAGE that will fly you out but its not the same as driving the old ford up to the migration and being able to move around to find them.

donm... In order to get into Canada from the US at the present time, you need a birth certificate and a clean criminal record, because they will check most times. When you return to the US I'm not sure if they would require anything other than what I said above. I know there was some talk about the US requiring passports for re-entry but I believe that was postponed for a year or two.

Liquid,

They would only punch deeper into the tundra to dam up another river to build a new dam. Those dams were the single biggest investment ever made by a Canadian province and took over 10 years to build ( i lived in Quebec for 21 yrs ). They still have excess capacity right now. As for the flyin what I meant is an August flyin to the tundra by other outfitters that specialize in that. I have done that also and quite frankly the 2 experiences don't really compare. The flyin is a true top of the world feeling. Its way more expensive ( 3.5-4K ) but the bulls are huge and the hunt is great. I would save your pennies and try that rather than go back up to the trans taiga every december. To give you an idea of where they fly you in check your satelite map and look for the George river.

Ok, I thought I would update this a little bit since nobody has posted back to me about the caribou. We flew up there yesterday and checked things out. This is what we found.

The biggest majority of the herds are Northeast of the Zonefor non-residents and still going northeast. If they don't turn around, the hunting's through this year. There is also a fair amount of animals southwest of the zone which don't seem to be moving at all except for a little movement further south. The guys that are up there right now are having to work pretty hard for their animals. By that I mean 50 mile snowmobile rides one way. And they're getting further away. In all fairness, there are a few stragglers around the Trans-taiga road but you're going to have to be really lucky. If they keep going, by the time I get up there on Monday or Tuesday, there's not going to be any. But the money has been paid so I'm going.

An update on the outfitters there, because when we got back I called them...here's their replies.
The Mirage told the truth. Said it was a hard hunt and was going to get harder. Definately required a snowmobile. Really!!! No crap. Unless you can walk 40 miles.

Nouchimi out and out lied. Said there was caribou all over the road and their non-resident hunters filled this morning. Just for fun, I told them I was at the Mirage, hadn't seen anything, was going to stop by and take a look at the caribou their hunters had gotten. Guess what? Told me their hunters had already left earlier in the morning. lol

Kiskimaastakin told the truth. They said caribou are there, north of them on the lake and you would need a snowmobile. Which was true. We saw about 3000 animals there but they were heading northeast.

Donat Asselins answer was short and sweet.Pay in mind, we flew over there. "When our hunters leave here on the 19th, we are CLOSING FOR THE YEAR. No caribou here, too late for this year." How's that for an answer? At least it was truthfull.

I made this post for myself and the other guys that are booked to go up later. I hope they turn around!! Thanks for reading.

I did not even need my licence to get into CA. On the way bcak they checked my tags against my licence and that was it.
