Unfortunately the herd looks like it is very concentrated. When they are concentrated like this; I've seen them move through very quickly and that results in tough hunting during some periods. Hopefully they will string out since the ice isn't safe yet. The weather is consistant, it's cold enough to snow and slowly form ice. No real frigid cold periods in the near forecast. That should slow their southward movements somewhat.

If the migration is heavy you could probably shoot them off the porch. A bull cariboucan go 450 pounds, but I would say 350-375 is about average.

I would predict we will see a split to the east/west as they get closer to LA1 - also looks like a GRH element could also pull a few east. They may also split with some leads going south into Laforge and a group going west along Lagrande and circling back to and above Kisk. I think it was 2005 this was the pattern andhunting was good both below the road and also uptop off the Kisk Freeway.

The herd is spread out E/W -64 to -74 and N/S 55.5 to 59. Big area and remember only cows are broadcasting and they tend to stick together after the rut which is passing now - mate and shut down for the winter. So draw a big circle around all the extents and there is the herd.

Early hunters - watch them east of Laforgeyou may see some big bulls out along the valley that runs from LA2 down belowtheTaiga road - I saw 2 taken outthat area in 2004 that were better than 475lbs withmassive shovels. Cree told me the best hunting was around KM450when they come down east of Laforge.

Also - Mirage says they got 15 cm of snow last night and it has been snowing steady all day so far, and it is -9C.

Let the packing begin. One week to the opener. Just over two weeks till my groups departure.
Should be a good season, as it looks now.
