RE: Alberta deer hunters & rattling
Too bad on the weather and not getting your trophy JD! Well I never got a booner or even close but I am pretty happy how the season on a whole went i got a freezer full of meat, lots of memories of good times, yet learned more and did get a little bone to hang. Our moose hunt turned out pretty well given poor weather and lots of hunters, we had fog for the first 2 days, snow for 3 days and darn cold -30 for the last 2 days - but the bucks were moving all week. We focused on moose till thursday and ended up harvesting 3 calf out of our crew of 6 in the bull/calf season. We saw only one bull on tuesday but the guy missed...how do you miss a moose[&o]..I guess it happens. We came home with deer as well, nothing huge but some respectable bucks. I filled my second either with a 5x5 bush buck on friday by rattling a swamp in the cold -30 weather at midday. Finished off the season on a busted up 5x in forest fringe.

Nice pics Skeeter! Looks like it was a successful season for you and your buddies. Well, here's to next year and whatever it holds:D...
By the way, what are you using for loads in your 7mm? I'm lookin for new loads to try...JDinAB |
RE: Alberta deer hunters & rattling
Thanks JD...I agree here's to next year!!!
Moose & Elk - I usually go with failsafe or nosler parts but this year couldn't get the reloads to group in 140 or 160 so I went with the 154Gr Hornady Interlokts SP and they performed very well. Accuracy was sub 1"/100. They were handloaded as well (I don't handload yet, just got a guy who loads for me right now). I will probably try and get back to the failsafes or similar next fall as I have always had excellent results from these bullets on the bigger critters...the interlockts worked but I think they might be a bit fragile for elk to be considered my goto bullet. Deer - I use Nosler Ballistic Tips or Hornady SST's. Both bullets have performed flawlessly in the field and on the range for me over the years in a variety of calibers and grs. In the 7mm rem mag I personally like the 150's but I know others find the 140's good. I was hoping to try the accubond(nosler) and Interbond(Hornady) this fall but didn't have time...those will be my next trail/error bullets for deer. Again in 150 grains. How about U??? |
RE: Alberta deer hunters & rattling
I used to use Federal premium 165 BTSP until this year. I have only hand loaded one type so far and it's shooting pretty well. I'm using 69 gr. of H-1000 powder and 162 gr. SST's. I really like the SST's and the bullet weight, so I don't think that will change to anything smaller or bigger, but I do want to try different powders. I found the 165's worked great for all the animals I hunted so the 162's are right up my alley. Thanks for the input & all the best in the new year:D....JDinAB
