Skeeter...nice to have ya back and good on ya for the fine looking bull:DI haven't hunted them in a while but I do remember the hair on the back of my neck standing when you get inside their zone and you have nothing but bugles and horns surrounding you. Loved the story, but I guess it's time for the frustrating animals (mulie & w.t.)[:@]keep us posted on those stories as well. My sat. was good, saw lots of mulie does and the moose from the pics previously. Was 38 yds from a badger but wanted to get 35, needless to say down he went with no shot taken. Anyhow here's a few pics as usual.

Ag...its been a few years since I had to research material so it would be nice if gave the old fella a recap instead;)! Plus a lot of guys hear to sound off and that in the end will be better for yeah!

JD, thanks and good to see your still getting them great field photos. Best of luck. I could use a mini version of you each fall, you know "pocket sized". I never even took a picture of my bull till I dragged him out, picture was at the alfalfa field where I brought the truck and quad to load him up..gooddistance south of where he fell to the 7 mag.[&:] I am really bad at this camera thingy:eek:.

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

Skeeter: heres a recap of my question foryou and JD, since you guys are the moe experienced on this thread:

I was given permission to hunt two areas, both of which are private land and both of which have large (100 acres++) of nursery stock.

The areas are whitetail inhabited exclusively, and I am the only one who has permission so pressure is slim to none.
One of the areas is basically a river bed, so its choked thick with brush, but the one hour ive spent in there I jumped three bucks and a number of does outta their beds - so there are deer there. My question regard this particular area is how would you guys recommend hunting somewhere so noisy you cant get to em without spooking them? Wait till rut and rattle? Tree Stand? Deer Drives?

The other area is a nursery that borders a small mountain (actually right on the US border, but im in Canada) - the bit ive hunted this piece of property ive seen groups of deer some and feed out into a fallow field (may be a natural field) and in one evening spotted 20+ does and 4+ young bucks. I believe the genetics are atleast decent in the area as these young (2.5-3.5 yr old) bucks were all sporting 3 and 4 point racks.

Would you guys figure in regard to this second piece that if I spend enought ime in the area and wait for em to come ottta the forest a more mature buck is bound to show up? There is also one other option - there is a semi-open hill side about half way up the mtn with some gulleys with thick cover. I figure the deer probably bed down up there during the day - should I check that area out?

Hia: How manypeople per team? Want me to sign up if theres a Canadian Team?

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

Ag, first off I know their are others that are as or more experienced than I. Secondly my mountain & deer experience is absolutely zero so fellas like JD, Duffy, etcare probably better equipped to give you specifics seeing they actually have mountains where they hunt(not man made ones like here:().

Spot 1: Bumping deer b/c your in their bedroom. River bottoms are prime bedding areas for whitetails. If you want to hunt thisspot I would wait tilllate-pre rut(chasing but not getting any) and rattle, this works really well next to the bedroom but it is atouchy proposition since pressure in the safe area is bound to effect the deer using it. I would suggest some more scouting time! What are they eating? Where? Relation to bedding area and water? Trails to and fro? Wind direction accounting? Try to establish their routine and then intercept it at the best location that doesn't effect the deers natural movements.I'd look toset up on intersection of where heavily used paths meet the lesser travelled(often the one bucks use), basically in transition areas from bed to sources. Staging areas they use before moving into a vast opening or food source. If thick/dense cover a treestand would probably be to your advantage. I basically start out close to food and as rut approaches move back closer to the bedroom. I hate being right in the bedding area though, 100 yards on the outside is where I feel more comfortable when rattling.

#2) You know the food source, the next is to determine where they are coming from (bedding) and how (trails). Mature bucks will often hang in the shadows waiting until last light or even darkness to enter a open field. Early season and rutcan beexceptions to this rule. When I find a hot food source I try to determine the basics then look to a transition area to where I can best intercept the deer moving in safety to this source. Last resort is sitting on the food itself for me. It can be a trail that runs lateral along the food source that is just yards from the fields edge, it maybe a ridge, funnel, small meadow, etcseveral hundred yards back..commonly called"staging area". These are where I prefer to be if not getting aggressive and rattling.

In short you need to answer some questions the only way to do so is putting in some boot time.If hunting is open then by all means still hunt itb/c you never know what you may come upon. Scouting doesn't end when hunting season begins;)!

Sounds like you have 2 spots with very good potential, you have seen deer &limited pressure is a big bonus. All that is required is getting your hands a little dirtyto find"the spot within the spot".

Best of luck and hope it helps you some.
