Manitoba Muzzleloader - Who's Going?
Just wondering if there are any other Manitobans around and if so where they might be heading for opening day. Plan to be inmy stand in Agassiz Forest. First year ML but hopes are high. Lots of sign and plenty of deer sightings on grouse trips.

RE: Manitoba Muzzleloader - Who's Going?
I hunt in the Swan River area, (close to home). I won't be out the first day, but then it only takes a 10 minute drive from home to hunting. I been MZing for 8 years now + I love it. I hunt on private land, mostly, where I am the only hunter allowed. Quite a few bucks around, but getting within range for a killing shot makes for a tough hunt. I use an inline .50 cal. with a scope. Longest shot so far has been 137 yards, I paced it off myself. But I wouldn't try that again, to far of a shot. No problem up to 100 yds. bullet placement is everything. Practice lots, off + on all summer. Where do you buy your supplies? Do you use pellets or loose powder? What bullets do you use?

RE: Manitoba Muzzleloader - Who's Going?
powderburns - being new I have bought the basic supplies from SIR/Wholesale Sports here in Winnipeg. Am shooting a .50 caliber Traditions Pursuit LT with 100 gr. of Pyrodex (2 pellets). Using Hornady .240 XTP MAG's. Haven't done a whole lot of shooting - just the sighting in process but looking forward to doing more next summer/fall.

RE: Manitoba Muzzleloader - Who's Going?
I bought my knight at Farmers Supply on nairn, now known as Wholesale Sports at that address. When I bought mine they were on sale at S.I.R. + Farmers matched the price. Wholesale has the cheapest price for pyrodex pellets, at least they did a month ago whenIpicked up a new box. I also use the 240's. I also use my muzzleloader during the rifle deer season. This fall I carried my MZloader a couple of times while moose hunting in the Duck's, but never saw a moose.

RE: Manitoba Muzzleloader - Who's Going?
powderburns - good to know about Wholesale. I guess some guys who do a lot of ML shooting say it's worth driving to Grand Forks and picking up a bunch of stuff. My sons and I were up at Duck Mountain at Thanksgiving for fishing trip. Could only stay overnight as they both had to be back at work. We stayed at Childs Lake. Not much luck fishing (tried East Blue, Perch, Two Mile) but want to go back. Our first time there and we were impressed with the beauty of the park.Seemd to be a fair number of hunters around. Next time we'll try to arrange a longer stay as it is a good drive from Winnipeg.
Good luck when you do go out!! |
RE: Manitoba Muzzleloader - Who's Going?
We hunt on private and public land. The first 3 days of the ML seasonwe will be huntingabout 40 minutes NE of the city on private land. We`ve seen lots of sign( beds, rubs, some scrapes, major trails, droppings) and we have 2 nice treestands to use. I use a CVA...50cal...100gr Pyro...285gr Buffalo Bullet, open sights.
Good luck on the opener guys. Ron:D |

RE: Manitoba Muzzleloader - Who's Going?
Hey fellow Manitoban's,
I tried a new spot in Agassiz Forest opening evening. I just realized last week that they turned my favorite hunting spot into a gravel pit![:'(] RandyH: Are you hunting off #44 or #216? My Pursuit LT is shooting tight groups with 100 gr of Pyrodex pellets and 300g Hornady sabots. Lets hope this weather gets colder soon. Jonathan |

RE: Manitoba Muzzleloader - Who's Going?
First day of the season was kinda of a bust. Picked my partner up at 5:30AM, loaded up the vehicle and away we went all excited. Well, we got about 10 miles outside the city and as we were passing a car, my buddy blew the clutch on his rig.
Driving back to the city in only third gear we at least missed the morning rush hour(was interesting to say the least). We got back safe and had a nap until the sun came up then started to work on the vehicle. It took us about 8 hours to drop the tranny as we don`t have all the proper tools. Man, talk about juryrigging but at least it worked. All I have to do now is go back in the morning and help put the !^#~#@#!~ thing in! So much for my first day of vacation! Ron |
RE: Manitoba Muzzleloader - Who's Going?
Hunting off Julius Road area, Jono - got a nice fat doe Wednesday afternoon. Looking forward to some nice roasts, chops and sausage. Am shooting Hornady XTP MAG's in .240. First year ML and really enjoyed it.

RE: Manitoba Muzzleloader - Who's Going?
Hey guys,
It's good see a bunch of Toban's on here. Congrats on the 1st smokepole deer there Randy. I'll head out tomorrow formy 1st time this year. I've got a 2nd deer tag and hope to fill it around home. Once the meat is in the freezer I can start looking for a hog. We head out for our annual week hunt around Ninette the week of Remebrance Day. Hopefully, we start to see some rut activity pick up by then. Already seeing some small scrapes aorund home. I love muzzle season |

RE: Manitoba Muzzleloader - Who's Going?
I was at Wellman Lake today, snow is gone except a bit in the shady area's.

RE: Manitoba Muzzleloader - Who's Going?
Well, that’s not what I wanted to here.:(

RE: Manitoba Muzzleloader - Who's Going?
Harvested my first deer with a muzzleloader Friday night. A young 4x4 buck out of Agassiz PF. I'm not sure if it was my grunting, doe bleats or pure luck, but he came into my clearing about 15 minutes after sunset. Beautiful animal, who looks really tasty.
Jonathan P.S. It's sort of bittersweet because I missed a similar sized buck this morning in my Archery only area.[:'(] |
RE: Manitoba Muzzleloader - Who's Going?

RE: Manitoba Muzzleloader - Who's Going?
Well my BP season was a bust, too many chicken hunters. Before people start saying that they have every right to be there listen to this. I had guys coming as close as 50 yrds away from my stand and when they we see me some would still walk around me looking for birds.I was hunting on a trail about 500 yrds from the truck which these yahoo's would just walk right past and spoil my hunt.I tried to give these two especially stupid jerks that came up to my stand the "what gives"but they wouldn't stop to talk to me.I also had some gap toothed yocal come by with a quad saying he was just out cruising around.I mean what ever happen to hunting etiquette.

RE: Manitoba Muzzleloader - Who's Going?
trac209- I can sympathize re the other hunters. Been there; had that happen, and there is not a lot you can do to combat ignorance. But I've seen the other side too, where a guy apologized profusely for blundering into the area I was watching from my stand. This fall, about 2 weeks ago, my son scouted out a good stand location for his portable. We went out last week to hang the stand and in a tree 10 feet from the one he had picked was another guys stand. What are the odds in an area the size of the Sandilands!!! We managed to find another location.
Hope if you go for rifle season, your luck is better. |
