ML Supplies - Winnipeg
Hadn't noticed there was a Canadian section before - new to ML and have been posting questions on the BP forum. Any of you shooters from Winnnipeg - would be interested in where you pick up your supplies? Trying to find where I can get the best bang for my buck.
Thanks. |
RE: ML Supplies - Winnipeg
Randy, welcome to the Canadian side. Best bang for your buck WELL.....Two of the most popular outdoor store are S.I.R. and Wholesale sports. Make sure to compare prices before buying especially if its a expensive item. The prices of goods have been coming down because of the strong Canadian dollar but I really like to do my shopping at Cabela’s in East Grand Forks. It’s just a 2 hour drive and if you know your prices you can save quite a bit. You can also check with Canadian Tires for ammo and hunting gear. That’s pretty well it.. Maybe someone else can add something that I might have forgotten.:D

RE: ML Supplies - Winnipeg
Thanks for the reply - actually I bought most of my accessories at SIR but usually they are a bit pricey on most stuff. See my post "Expert advice" on the BP forum where I talk about picking up TC anti sieze lubricant. I picked it up from Wholesale Sports. If you shoot an inline with breech plug, what do you use as grease? Do you have to pay any duty or taxes on the stuff from Cabela's?

RE: ML Supplies - Winnipeg
Sorry I can’t help you on ML. I’ve never done it but I will add on the part about Cabela’s.. I’ve gone to that store maybe a dozen times in 2 years. I would suggest to go on line and order one of there catalog first so that you can compare prices to what you can get in Winnipeg. Here’s there link.. www.cabelas.com Or you can just check from there web page.
You don’t have to pay duty if the items are made in the states. Just make sure to keep your receipts and when it’s time to come back, declare what you’ve purchased. They’ll convert it to Canadian dollars and you have to pay GST & PST. You might have to pay duty on clothing, this i’m not sure but for reloading stuff and that includes ML, it’s only the taxes. When you compare prices make sure to do the conversion to Canadian bucks. Like I said , I’ll usually leave early Saturday morning and I’m be back by early afternoon. The saving could be really good so check it out. It’s a 4 hour round trip, no different the going to Brandon and back. I forgot to mention that I use my wife's car it’s really good on gas so that might be something to consider when comparing prices. Good luck...;) |
RE: ML Supplies - Winnipeg

RE: ML Supplies - Winnipeg
Try Silver Hieghts Archery at Mount Royal and Portage, they sell a line of ML also but I can`t remember which one.

RE: ML Supplies - Winnipeg
That’s interesting, I’ve bought archery equipment for years at Heights and now they sell ML. I haven’t been there in quite a while. I guess I’ll have to go and see what’s new. :D

RE: ML Supplies - Winnipeg
randyh, just a further thought on Cabelas - since you guys are fairly close to their Grand Forks location, you should probably drive and pick up what you want. If you order online - like I have on several occasions - you'll get stuck with customs brokerage fees. Plus, depending on the time of year, they can be kinda slow shipping things out. I've learned that I'm better off driving to their Dundee, MI location and returning to Windsor, ON than buying from them online.

RE: ML Supplies - Winnipeg
What about Russels ? Do they still exist ?
|
RE: ML Supplies - Winnipeg
Terry, As far as I know we never had a Russels in Winnipeg but there is a Russels Sports. They are located in Calgary. This is the web site if you’re interested. www.russellsports.com I ordered there catalogue online:D

RE: ML Supplies - Winnipeg
There's a place in Portage La Prairie as well. I think it's called Macdonalds's Sporting Goods or something like that. I've heard he has good prices and will order pretty much anything in for you as well.
Ron carries CVA muzzleloaders and Thompson Centers at Heights. Nice prices as well. He's also got a bunch of supplies like bullets and such. I can't remember ever seeing powder though.I like to get what I can from him. It's nice to support the little guys that have good service. SIR.......phhfffff. Don't care about them. Too manyidiots with attitude working there. I head to Cabela's at least once a year too. I was justthere this weekend. Spent about 2 hours browsing around. I got some new boots and rain gear. I got 800 gram thinsulate Rocky Lynx boots for $100 US. At SIR the 400 gram ones are $180 so it was a good deal. Also gota Silent Pro rain suit for $120.SIR has nothing to compare with this. One thing to remember about Cabela's. Just because something is in the catalogue doesn't mean the GF store will have it. They aren't big enough to carry everything in the catalogue so if you've got your heart set on something, it's best to phone ahead 1st. Plus, I don't think asa Canadian, you are allowed to have ammunition or powder. They will sell it to you and the Canadian border guys will let you bring it in but if the American cops find you with it, you're in trouble. Something to do with the new terrosist laws. You might want to check that out too if you're planning on buying any of that stuff. You could always order it. I've also noticed that catalogue prices are sometimes cheaper than the store prices. Good luck. You'll love ML hunting. It's a great season! |
RE: ML Supplies - Winnipeg
Cyrus, thanks for the info on the powder and the ammunition. I wasn’t aware of that. I had checked with the custom officer and they hadn’t mentioned anything. All they told me was that you could bring up to 16 lbs. across the border. I’ll have to check it out. I have to agree with you on S.I.R. Sometimes they sure have an attitude problem.

RE: ML Supplies - Winnipeg
Ron @ Heights archery is a d!*khead and I will not give him one cent unless I cannot get what I want anywhere else. Heartland archery gets all my business for archery and for ML supplies, well I have my load that works so I go to SIR once a year and stock up for that then am good to go.Wholesale Sportsfor most other things i need.

RE: ML Supplies - Winnipeg
randyh, I have used the TC breech/nipple grease in the past but prefer CVA slick Breech/nipple grease (hard to find up here in canada lately and wholesale does not stock it!). Any way I would put on a layer of the TC anti seize on the threads then wrap it with plumbers grade teflon tape for the range(Pink colour not white). It can be bought for 2 bucks at almost any hardware/building supply store and will last years! When I hunt I just use the pink teflon tape on the breech threads and the TC anti-seize on the nipple...never had a stuck breech. I will say if you do a range session and shoot a fair amount check the breech every 10 shots and re-apply if sticky. Also remove the plug after your last shot and you will not have any troubles. The pink teflon alone will also work but you must check it when on the range faithfully, if shooting hotter loads every 5 shots or so would be my suggestion. Also make sure to only finger tighten these components!
The CVA Slick grease I mentioned is awesome (if you can find it)and had no problems with it alone. I make sure all threads are coated liberally and remove the excess pushed back into the breech area with a q-tip. Best of luck. |
RE: ML Supplies - Winnipeg
We really need another sporting goods store to open here in Winnipeg eg Cabela's or Bass pro.S.I.R is getting away with robbery because they know their the only gig in town other than Wholesale sports, formerly Farmers supply.Cabela's would do so well here I don't know why they haven't thought of opening a store here.
|
RE: ML Supplies - Winnipeg
trac209 - I think the competition would be good for the local stores. But I don't think Cabela's has any plans to open anything here soon. They are not yet anywhere in Canada, so Winnipeg would be far down the list should they choose to open in our country.
|
RE: ML Supplies - Winnipeg
randy, I would have to agree with you. There's no way they would open one in Winnipeg because of the one in East Grand Forks but sure would be nice.
