i have a nikon buckmaster series in 4.5-14x42 that i think is equal to, in quality, than my leupold in same magnification.
i like the forgiving eye relief of the nikon and the $$$ i saved on it.
both the scopes are nearly worth their weight in gold though.

I think you are making a great choice for that rifle. Leupold makes some scopes with a larger objective that still sit low on the rifle. One scope has a 56mm objective that sits as low on the rifle as the 40mm objective. You might want to check it out, big mule deer bucks move in low light.
