srw, I'd have to say a 3-9 set on 9 has enough "power". The problem is resolution or optical clarity. Cheap scopes have inferior lens/ coatings.

The Sightron s2 big sky with their $50 rebate is just over $300 right now, and a 4200 can be had for under $300. Many people more knowledgeable than I would say that these are two of the best performers at this price point.
