Fixed power hunting scope

Who uses a fixed power hunting scope for hunting? Which one?

If I were going to buid a 100 - 350 yd hunting rifle today, I think it would be a Savage in 308, 280 Rem or30'06 AIwith a 6x scope on it. It would be nice if the scope had a 300 and 400 yard line in it also. I'm thinking this would be for western walking hunting of Antelope, Deer and Elk.

I carry a Savage 99 C in 308 Win. It's topped with a 6X Bushnell . The scope and rifle have been mated for about 35 years now. I have shot antelope, deer and moose with this rig since 1970 and have no complaints about it. My farthest shot to date has been 250 yds. At this stage I''m afraid to change anything for fear of hexing my luck.

Ditto.

Would that I'd have discovered it sooner.

RE: Fixed power hunting scope

For my first10 years of hunting, I had a 6 shot Mauser 30'06 with a Weaver 4x. It was all built during the 60's as a military rifle conversion. The gun would shoot almost any ammo into a 5 shot 1.25" group at 100 yards. It weighed 12 lbs. I was never let down by that rifle or the 4x scope. I knew my dad's rifle had a 3 - 9 on it, but I never once thought I needed something better. I would probably be smart to still be hunting with that rifle.

I know a lot of guys have a fixed power scope and love them. However for me unless I'm just shooting 50 yards or so I much prefer and adjustable scope. For ranges of 150-200 yards I like to be able to crank the power up. However, for 25-50 yards I don't want a scope that has a lot of magnification so I can just turn it down to 3x if I want to.

I've always felt that if I'm going to buy a quality scope to go ahead and get a 3x9 or more. Nothing wrong with a fixed power if that is what you want, but the added power to look at a deer's head to either make sure it is a doe instead of a nub or to make sure it is rack wise what you want to shoot.
