countrykat, dont know if i would get a 10-22 for a boy that young. you might want to start him out with a single shot or a bolt action .22 for safety reasons. as for a scope i would suggest a straight 4x or a 3x9 one inch scope. more field of view and better eye relief. just on opinion.

bushnell banner 3-9x40 worked for my 10/22.

At 9, I would say a 4x fixed is a best choice. I would look at Simmons, Weaver or Sightron.. .or maybe a red dot might be best. Red dot sights make eye relief less of a struggle which my girls have some trouble with. They are 7 and 12.

i have bushnell 3-9 32 22scopes on my 22mag and my henry and woodchucker. I've got good service out of them.

Another vote for the Nikon 4x32 Prostaff. It's an astoundingly good scope for the $, and will certainly last a lifetime.

I started shooting the 10/22 when I was 6-7 and got my first 870 shotgun when I was 8.
Age don't mean squat, it's how well they take to learning proper gun handling.

My boy is 3 and I plan on getting him on a BB gun next year.

Im looking for a scope for a 22 too, but i want it to shoot yotes. i think it should be adjustable? any ideas?
10/22 doesn't have enough knock down power for coyotes in my opinion.
I've always used my 243 for yotes at a distance and 12gauge 00buck for up close.

I have a cheap Simmons Deerfield 3x9 on my Ruger 10/22 and it's a tack driver.
Father in law gave me the scope as it was just collecting dust..
If it ever went south I would put a Nikon Prostaff 4x32 on it.
Sounds like we have the same setup. At 50 yards mine is a tack driver too. Really accurate.
I've upgraded to a Prostaff but just because that hand-me-down Deerfield I had was a little shady.
My two new Butler Creek 25rnd Hot Lips mags came in yesterday, can't wait to do some more plinking.

Do you have problems with those magazines being a lot harder to get to clip in than the normal one? I know I do with my Butler Creek Magazines. They are better than nothing but I wish they were a lot better quality than they are.
