RE: help on scope
Thats called an adjustable objective, and it is used to adjust for parallax in most scopes at 12X and higher. Parallax can be eliminated by adjusting the end of the scope to the given yardage of a shot. If the game is at 100 yards, put it on 100 if the game is at 300 yards, then you put it on 300. But for most hunting, you can set it on about 100 or 150 and be ok for most shots. If your farthest shot would be 50 to 100 yards then set it on 100 and you'll be fine.

RE: help on scope
I have a 4-16X44 Meopta Meostar and I leave the AO adjustment set at 100 yds unless I am sitting over an open field and have a shot over 200 yds present itself. Rifle is sighted in 1.25" high at 100 yds.

RE: help on scope
As an addendum to MichaelT's explanation: The numbers on the A.O. adjustment aren't always precise. You need to set it yourself using their #'s as a starting point. It might very well be that your scope setting of 200 yards (for example) may need to be either higher or lower than the actual marking would indicate. That is precisely why I do not like A.O. scopes for most regular deer hunting scenerios.
