Another scope question...

I know, I know, same ole question, different guy. But, I am looking for a stainless (silver) scope for my Browning A Bolt .270, for less than $350. I have always been stuck on the Leupold. They have always been good to me, but is there anyhting out there in that price range that is better quality in your opinion?? I can get a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40 for $250 New.

Thanks for your time,

Trent

Any of the top three scopes are a better choice than the VX II at the bottom. The Nikons are great scopes, I own about 9 of them. Some Monarchs and some Buckmasters. I would not hesitate to put the buckmasters 4.5 - 14 x 40 on it. In fact I have a couple of them on some of my guns and one is in fact silver. It has never failed me.

If you have any questions ... feel free to ask. And the pics and descriptions above are links to www.theopticzone.com ..... I do most all of my business with Jon and Tammi. Great folks to do business with.

God Bless

Nikon Monarch.

You can't get a vx-iii in your price range? personally I wouldn't own another leupold less than a vx-iii.

You may be paying more for a silver scope too, consider a matte black.....seen many stainless barrels with black scopes, and if it saves you $50 or more, why not?

MY uncle has the same gun with silver vx-ii 3-9, and it has proved to be very deadly.

Whats very deadly ??? the gun or the scope .... last time I checked, the gun did the killing ..... unless your uncle removes the scope and beats the game over the head with it.

The VX II is inferior in quality to the Nikon Buckmasters and most certainly the Monarch.
And it cost more than the Buckmasters line, and almost as much as the Monarch. It doesn't use ambient light as effectively, having a lower % of pass through, than either Nikon scope line.

Does it have click reticle adjustments, or does it have Friction reticle adjustments, which are inferior to click adjustments.??

So what exactly makes it such an awesome killing maching.????

I'd also suggest the Sightron Big Sky II 3-9 X 42. It's around $350 and is a very good choice.

I know nothing about this scope , so I cannot comment on it, but this is the one he mentioned from the same place as those above.

Geez..the gun does the killing?
I always thought it was the bullet that did the actual killing.;):D
Or is it the person?:D:D:D

FWIW, Sightron scopes have great glass (LOW, Japan), a great warranty and CS, a lens coating comparable to the Rainguard on Bushnell Elites, several reticle choices, decent eye relief and are rather light weight. What's not to like.

Like the others that have and will post a reply, you have plenty of options in the $300-$400 range. For years, and especially of late, I have struggled to determine the "break" where the quality vs. price optimizes. I think it is about in this range. So whatever you chose, you should be OK. That is the beauty of the scope market for the past 10-15 years or so. Now that some really neat coatings have been developed, there is even more value for your $$$ than 15 years ago or so.

There are certainly fans of this or that manufacturer and scope type ... and no one is wrong. Despite my usual wordiness, the point I try to stress every time on "scope advise' is that you buy the best that you can afford. In my opinion Leupold offers a good value line in the Vari-X II and Vari-X III. I am convinced that there is a quantum leap in very low light performance and contrast between the two and would hold out for the Vari-X III.

I am a big fan of the Zeiss Conquest right now. It is pricier than what appears to be your range, but if you can go Vari-X III you can probably go Conquest. Take a good look through one of these if at all possible.

what do you guys think about the burris fullfield II?
looks reasonable and has a great warranty

RE: Another scope question...

Not a bad scope, but not as good as the nikon. I would say it is just a slight bit below the Buckmasters.

Michael, RELAX, Im not trying to sell this guy anything. Just relaying an opion on what I have seen. My Uncle has had this scope for quite some time and hasnt had any problems with it. The vx-ii that I owned was a great scope as well.

Yes, it does have click adjustments.

so the buckmaster scope is better than a Leupold VXII or a Burris Fullfield??

MichaelT. 07-28-2008 04:08 PM

RE: Another scope question...

Having used all of them, IMHO .... YES.

I also have had to use the repair centers for the burris and the nikon, and the Nikon was better for the warranty work. Kept me apprised of the scope the entire time and I got it back first.... they were shipped out at the same time on the same day.

I am relaxed, I apologize if it seemed otherwise....and thanks for the clairification on the vx II ... they did have friction a while back, but I was not sure if thay had been updated.

sounds like a Bushnell Elite 3200

Michael, the vx-i are friction adjust. Some earlier vx-iis may have been friction as well.

Look through them side-by-side. That is what I did and that is why I bought my Leupold over the Nikon.

RE: Another scope question...

I had a warranty problem with some Nikon binos a few years ago (4-5) and I was NOT impressed with Nikon's response (send it in and we'll charge you $70 to repair them....on a pair of binos that only cost about $100).

So, unless they've changed their support I won't be buying from them if I can avoid it. Leupold has been better for me with bino repairs and Zeiss has been wonderful, sending me a replacement anytime I've called. So for me Zeiss is the answer and the Conquest line you can get a 3-9x40 foraround $400.

If that is too much the Bushnell Elite 3200 4-12x40 I just bought for my wife this year is quite a nice piece of glass too.

If you can, look through your options at a Sportsman's Warehouse or Cabelas store if you can and your eyes will tell you which is the best in your price range. Just be careful of the warranty on some optics as that can make a big difference if you ever have a problem.
