I've not personally seen either, but the Vortex Viper series has had some good press.

J, The typical Viper in 3-9 X 40 runs about $325 + or -. The Vortex Diamondback is cheaper and may be what you are referring to.

The high end alpen 3-9X42 is around $200 bucks, the binos got good write ups, thinking about trying the apex scope??

Check the specs - they may be the same piece, rebranded. If so, go with the longer warranty.

I bought a Vortex Viper 2-7x for my mountain rifle, & I've been well pleased with it.

not sure which optics you are looking at (bino's, spotter, or scope)....but i got the vortex diamondbacks at http://cameralandny2.reachlocal.net/for $129 and that is some great piece of Glass right there....warranty is killer as well

I have the Alpen shasta ridge binos....8x32 i bought them off ebay for 97 bucks brand new in the box. Awesome binos.

I have seen through both and optically they are very very close. I picked the Vortex simply because it seemed that it was a better quality made spotting scope. Basically you cannot go wrong with either. It becomes a matter of personal preference.
