Both Leupold and Zeiss are outstanding optics, but the Leupold is priced a little more reasonable.
Huh? YOu can get a ZEiss 3-9x40 for anywhere from 379 to 449 the Leupold VX-III 3.5-10x40 is in the high 400's thru mid 500's depending on reticle

Zeiss for sure , but I'd go with the 4.5 x 14 x 44 for the 7mm Mag. Thats what I have on my 300 WSM (long range). The 3.5 x 10 x 44 is better for a non magnum calibers. The 7mm mag can really reach out, you want a scope that can help you achieve your rifles full potential.

Zeiss Conquest
I have several high end scopes that cost me 3X or more what the Conquest that I bought for my muzzle loader set me back. My other scopes include 2 Swarovski's top models, the best that Kahles has to offer and Zeiss VMV model. Frankly I cannot see 3X the difference !!!
Mine is a 3x9-50mm with the German #4. I paid right at $550. The 40 mm runs about $50-$75 less.
I also have a 4 year old Leuplod Varix-III, 3.5x10-50 mm. which cost me about the same in late 2003. The Conquest seems to me to be a better product. Could be the newer coatings. Have o clue how the current Vari-X III would stack up. I have sat on my deck at sunset and viewed into the woods behind my house, comparing these two (and my other scopes). The Swarovski's and VMV are hands down the better. Should be for the $$$$ ??? The Kahles is next then the COnquest. The Leupold is "gone" several 8-10 minutes before the Conquest and appeared to me to be much better in the areas of edge to edge crispness and contrast.
I cannot attest to the ruggedness of the Conquest having used it only one season and probably no more than 100 rounds through my 50 cal. muzzle loader.
